what tools or special parts do i need to do a gear change? i have the gears, the carriers, the bearings, the seals, and shims.

If I remember right, you will need to make/buy a case spreader.



Micrometer for measuring the shims, dial idicator w/magnetic base for the backlash, may need a puller for the yoke. Maybe a torque wrench and pry bars. Grease marker or some similar to check the pinion/ring gear depth.



Plus the obvious tools for removing the bolts.



May be others, but that's what comes to mind. Been quite a few years since I've done one.
 
Unless you have done it before many times, I would just take it to a differential specialist shop. Then you know everything is set right and if it gets jacked up from misalignment or messed up measurements, you get to take it back to the shop and get it re-done for their screw-up. Just my 0. 02:)
 
I've done a few of these. You dont need a case seperator but you will need a bearing seperator, a dial indicator and a torque-meter. You have to have the torque meter to tell the preload on the pinion bearings to see if they need shims or not. If you have never done one take my advice and have someone else do it.
