I do not tow but 5-6 times a year with my camper and boat and I put alot of highway miles on my truck. I have a 2002 with 4. 10 gears that I am going to change to 3. 54 gears. It is 4 wheel drive. I have been quoted $1500 for the job. What is the price for the gears and is it a difficult job to do on my own? Thanks Ken

I am not sure of the cost of the gears only but I know that when i have my 3. 54s removed and 4. 10s installed it was either $1050 or $1150 for everything out the door.

Makes me which I had gotten the gears from the factory.

thats for both front and rear gears correct? if so thats about how much it costs. 4x4's require both gears being the same. The T-case locks both axles and they turn with each other. Different gearing will cause things to go SNAP. If its just the rear, you're getting shafted. You can install them yourself, its not that difficult. I've setup a few before on my old cars. Its is pretty critical though, and if your not mechanically inclined, don't attempt. Eating a set of gears and rebuilding an axle housing isn't fun. Smells bad too! I specifically made sure my truck had 3. 54's on it. It makes plenty of power to make up for it, and the highway mileage is nice.
