As I mentioned earlier, the part number came up as a DANA 80, but the shop said the rear end appears to be some kind of hybrid. Most of the rear end appears to be a 70.

Who knows?? I can say it is the stock unit for a 2500 4X4 99. 5 Dodge Quad Cab Diesel.

The Dana 60 and 70 has a gear case split between 4. 10 and 4. 56 ratio's and the Dana 80 has the split between 3. 73 and 4. 10 ratio's. Some after market gear makers offer some " thick " gear sets , but the factory ( SPICER ) gear sets follow the carrier change . HTH,Thomas

It must be a 70 then. This makes sense as the 4X4 shop was surprised when they cross referenced the number on the differential and had it show as an 80. They said Dana 80's normally are found only on very heavy duty vehicles like Tow trucks.

I suspect that many on the forum have the same rear end, but think it is an 80 because of the part number. I think the dually may share the same rear end.

jimnance, I understand it to be that all 3500 Dodge's come w/ the Dana 80 and the 2500 HD Dodge's with a CUMMINS/ Standard trans or a V10 and a standard trans come w/ the Dana 80.

There are some hub and brake differences between the 3500 and the 2500 Dana 80's.

Most Dana 80's that come in larger trucks ( F-450's and older GM 3500H. D. 1-1/4 TON trucks usually have larger hubs and bigger axle shafts. Our Dodge's come with hub's and axle's much like the H. D. Dana 70's. HTH, Thomas
