This TSB is for differential oil level in 2004 trucks!

dmurdock: Check the owners/service manual. If you have a fill line stamped on your rear differential cover, then I think the 1" below the fill hole applies. If you don't have a fill line then the 1/4" below the fill hole +/- 1/4" should be the correct location as far as I can tell. Note that the proper differential oil level hasn't changed only the level of the fill hole in the cover is changed. I have no idea if this applies to the 2005 or 2006 Rams. I can't see why they don't leave well enough alone. Every differential that I've ever serviced was filled to the bottom of the fill hole until the 2004 Dodge Ram came out with the TSB!!! :confused: :confused: I have a Mag-Hytek rear cover and as best as I can tell my level is probably 1" above the original hole and so far no ill effects.
 
I run Amsoil 75W-90 in rear and I tow alot and my rear end stays pretty cool. No paint burned off here. No temp gauge but I didn't see any signs of excessive heat when I changed it before towing to Washington. Oil wasn't burnt, actually still felt good, rear end showed minimal wear, no massive wear on ring gear or spiders, and no discoloration, which would suggest overheating. In case you are wondering, I have 3. 73 gears and 35" duals on a truck lifted 2" front and rear and a flatbed that wieghs in @ 9400 with 1/8 tank of fuel towing a 13K lb 5th wheel. Milage on gear oil at change was about 70K. 74K total on truck now. About 15-20K of that is towing. I think a quality 75W-90 is perfect. And I am in Northern Cali alot of the time.
 
Boy, am I glad to see we finally have some documentation to the whole rear axle/gear oil TSB resolved once and for all!
