Factory Trailer Plug Replacement Options???

I'm looking at all the options for my 2001 5spd. used to tow a 27' 5th wheel. The gear splits are not the best and I can increase HP to pull through or split the gears. Have any members used a Gearvendors unit on their truck and how effective is it with a stock engine? The upside as I see it is the warranty issues with increasing engine performance. Thanks

John:
Just my opinion, but to up the power to "pull through the gears" , is putting a good bit of pressure on the parts from the clutch to the rear axle. One thing I have noticed useing the gear splitter is the RPM range never, with correct shifting, is outside a 600 RPM range. I don't feel the strain is as great when not relying totally on power.
Just my thinking.

Thanks for the reply, I agree that even though more costly than raising power, it eliminates all the warranty questions and stress on the weak links. I am satisfied with the power. Do you normaly tow in 4th over a highway speeds? How do you like the US gear unit?

I have a gearvendors overdrive, I found the same problem with my Dodge 3500, the gears are just too far apart... I love my gear splitter, in fact that was the first thing i did was to have one installed at the factory.

I have the Gearvendors with A/T. Like it a lot but a little extra power greatly reduces the need for shifting.

Last trip I made a couple of legs with my brother who has same truck and trailer but not bombed. To compare basic trucks I turned my boost off. When I got tired of shifting through the rolling hills, I turned the boost on, kept my speed up and waited for him after the top of the hills.

No trouble with the Gearvendors, but it is one more item to maintain.

Just my . 02 pesos.

Yes I tow in forth over at hwy. speeds of 50-60 mph. Thats put me at 1800-2200 rpm. When I shift to fifth, the rpm's remain the same with an increase of around 8 mph through the rpm range.
I do like the US Gear unit very much. I have about 46,000 miles on it with no trouble so far. I shift when I want. I find the higher rpm the better the unit shifts.
The Gearvender I'm am sure is a quality piece. I bought the other because I shift when I want. I operate an engine by the sound of the rpm's. I don't like an autos. , except in guns. Even with them I have a straight shift[ bolt ] .
Everyone will like what they spend their $$$$$$ on and I like mine.

I take it your engine is stock. How heavy of a trailer do you pull? Are you also going to use some engine enhancements in the future? Thanks for the reply's.

Put a splitter in. You will think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. #ad

Ok back to the matter at hand I have over 300 hp and still wouldn't do without my US Gear 2 speed I have about 30k on it with no problems so far. I Tow a 14 k 5er and need all the help I can get to have more fun towing.

Thanks to all who have replied, looks like everyone likes their spliters and most like horsepower too. I think I'll get some miles on my truck and keep watching the posts on all the options.

I used a Gear Vendors for several years on my last truck. Now getting ready to install same unit on 3500. IMHO the ability to split the gears allowed me to keep PRM in right range and keep speed up without lugging engine too much. At the time I was pulling a 40 foot fiver at about 16,000 pounds. Your $$$ take you choice.

I agree w/ Paul. #ad
Definitely put a splitter in. Best thing since sliced bread. Once you use one you'll wonder how any one pulls a serious load w/o one. Works so well I don't really need any more power for pulling horses over divide or cruising 85mph & obtain 20mpg. #ad
But one always wants more. Paul is only one I'm aware of that did POWER & a SPLITTER. I'm hestitant to add cam plate because I've been advised against it by plate manufacturer. Come spring I'll probably install one anyway! #ad

I have the GearVender like it alot. BUT!! IF you have any Trans,Driveline or Rearend failures, If your still under Warranty, The failure will be blamed on the GV so get ready for a fight with DC.
