Is anyone interested in a gear swap? I have 3. 55's and want to go to 4. 10's. I bought a big 5th wheel and want more low end. It's a 4x4. I'm working with a local shop right now, but it just seems easier to swap axles. Any takers? May not cost you anything. :--)

Nickaru, it looks like by your signature that you have the perfect tow truck. Why would you want to change to 4. 10's? I don't think you will like them running empty. Keep in mind that 4. 10's in 6th, will be like 3. 55's in 5th. Sorry, I know it is none of my business, I just had to vent!!

I hear ya about the 4. 10's. I had a 2001. 5 two wheel drive and it had the 4. 10 and seemed to run out of gears on the freeway but I never towed with it and it could have used the 3. 55's. My current truck is a freeway flyer and I wnet from a 21 foot toy hauler to a BIG 5th wheel trailer two weeks ago. The truck hops bad at times trying to take off from a stop. It does have the metallic clutch and I know that's it's nature, but I think the lower gears should minimize it. Also, according to Dodge's towing guide, with 4. 10 gears your max trailer weight is higher. My truck is a weekender and isn't a daily commuter. It gets to stay in my shop right next to my new Next Level Toy Trailer. :D

Currently, I run 5th gear to stay at the 55 MPH speed with the trailer. Last time I used 6th gear towing my little trailer, it cost me $400  :{ from the CHP clocking me doing 69 MPH. That's the sweet spot for her in 6th but not with a trailer.

I have about 56,000 miles on the truck and I use Lubrication Specialists gear oil. I can't remember the name, I have it at home. I'll post it when I get home.

Hi Nikaru I also live in Lancaster and might be interested in the gear swap any chance we could get together, I'm at L1 and 23rd west. 478-9626 Rob

Gears

Nickaru, I'd be real interested in what you think after the gear change. I have been thinking about going to 4. 10s also. I bought a big 5er and tow the boat behind it. I'm at about 21k lbs total and although I don't have any trouble getting it moving, I thought the new gears would be nice for the hills. Although NIsaacs point is a valid one. BTW, I also live in Lancaster. See you on the road.

Hey guys. I have a 99 with 3. 54s and an ATS trans. I pulled a 36' triple slide. dry wt. 12600 lbs. and with the comp box on the #3 setting had no problem doing 50 up the grapevine. I also live in Palmdale,(next to Lancaster). We need to meet you folks. There is a big group of Dodge Cummins owners here in the AV. How about coming out to the next DHRA drag races at LACR on July 16th. I will be there racing and so will a bunch of us including Rhancock (post #6) who is a friend of mine too. Check out www.LACR.net for times. Would love to meet you guys. Betty

I'm going to pencil in that date on my calendar for the DHRA races. Looking forward to it!

Great. . Will see you there. Did you get ahold of Rob about the gear swap? Just wondering how that will work for both of you. :D

In the shop

I just put it in the shop Monday for new 4. 10 gears and posi's front and rear. I waited and didn't get much on replies. Sorry. I'll have the 3. 55 gears and limited slip for sale shortly. Only 50k miles on them. :D

What's it going to run you $$$ for the swap? I'm thinking of doing the same thing 3. 54 to 4. 10. I have a 2wd so just the $$ for the rear end.
