I know you guys have probably already discussed this in detail, but in a nut shell... can I swap out 3:54 gears to 4:10 gears in a 2500 SRW rear end?

Didnt they offer 4:10 standard in the off road package? cant those gears just swap out?

Will this mess up my transmission shift points etc?

Thanks for your help.

Eric

If you tow then 4:10 are the way to go. I tow at 63 mph at 2000 rpm's. Old Cummins loves to pull at 2K.

If you cruise the freeways a lot, then you will want bigger tires than my 265's, as it gets a bit busy at 70 mph.

How about those SHIFT POINTS?

Getting closer & closer to dumping the 3. 5s & going to the 4. 10s (waiting to hear from the installer). So, how about those shift points on us auto trans guys.

So, you auto guys that have done this... . Did it change your shift points? Did you have to have your VB worked on to accomodate the new gears?

Thanks,

Clay

Clay, I doubt that Mother DC did anything different to the trannys w/3:54 vs 4:11. Your points should be around the same rpm but come in @ lower speeds due to gear change. of course your top end & cruise speeds will suffer unless you run bigas tires as mentioned earlyer in this thread.

I think what Klay is looking for is to be able to tow at 62-63 and having the old Cummins turning 2K. That is the sweet spot of RPM when towing. SNOKING

Spoke to Shanti at DTT. She said drive it & see how the shift points are. On the older trucks (99) it may not be necessary to adjust the shift points.

Well, now I have a new problem. My gear man was unable to do my gear swap due to daycare issues. Waiting... ...

Clay ;)

Changed out my 3. 54 for 3. 73 and couldn't be happier. Towing 33' travel trailer with CGVW just over 16K it runs 67 MPH at 2000. Right in the sweet spot. Ordered ring & Pinion and Master Bearing Install Kit from Randy's Ring & Pinion for of 395. 35. Took to local Dodge Dealer and had installed for $535. Total cost $930. 35. We have a lot of Border Patrol stationed here and their vehicles get rough use. Dodge Dealer has plenty of of experience doing front and rear differentials. Everything work great. Solo MPG on trip to Iowa in March 07, first two tanks averaged 23. 18. Good mileage and tows great.
