I am curious about pulling out my 3. 55 for a lower gear maybe around 4. 56 to allow for 36 in mudders. I need advice and prices on the swap. I went to a local junkyard and that poopy head said he wanted 2 grand just to exchange carriers let me emphasize the word EXCHANGE. I told him to stick it where the sun dont shine. All input would be appreciated and for all you locals some names of good shops. Im at 120k so warranty is not an issue on the engine or drivetrain.

Some local bombers are running back to back fueling boxes with propane and nitrous talk about screamers. claiming 600 plus ponies. I cant imagine my transmission already hates me.

On a different subject i love my tc but it is not very kind to you on ice. It tends to push you through the intersection. This is compounded by the fact that the rear brake adjusters dont work well at all.

You can get the gears locally at Young's Gear on

International. Going from 3. 55s to 4. 56s you will

need new carriers for both ends as the split for

60s and 70s is 4. 10 down/4. 56 up,numerically. You

should come join some fellow Alaskan Bombers next

Saturday, see notice under Local and Regional

Chapters. I may even have some 4. 56s laying here.

Why do you want 4. 56 gears? I wouldn't run those on little 36" tires even with a gas engine. In fact I didn't. I had 38" and 3. 73s with a 400 small-block that did just fine. I did my four-wheelin in low range though.

If I was you I would probally go with the 4. 10. Everybody Ive talked to said that running that size tire that you want and 4. 10's will feel like you running 3. 55's. I think Northern 4X4 quoted me about $1500. Give them a call. I coulda got the gears a Young's about a year ago for about $560 or so. Called around and everybody wants like $700-$900 for labor cost.

I went through all this about a month ago. Everyone I talked to on here said not to run the 4. 56's with my 36's It is just too much RPM. You do not need gears like that unless you want to spin the tires everywhere.

gears

It will give me the equivalent of 4. 11s at the ground i ran it through the number cruncher. I am heavy footed and this friggin thing will do almost 120 so 4. 56s will be a deterrent. And yes I like to lay rubber all day every day. Presently my 34. 5s give me a running gear ratio of 3. 00 and that is not to my liking.

stealer

I was at the stealer for parts and just for the hell of it i went to the service counter and asked them what they would get for labor. They said 1200 bucks. I went down to northern 4x4 and was chatting with the guy about soft lockers and how durable they were. I asked him if they would withstand over 1000 ft lbs and he poopy mouthed the cummins and the transmission. Said no one could put that to the ground. I got irritated and left. Pointless discussion. I want something that can withstand any future mods i could forsee. Like the hardon i have for propane and nitrous.

4.56s

If you are going to change from 3. 54s to 4. 10s you don't need to

change carriers with either the Dana 60 or 70.

It's fairly easy to find used 4. 10 gears in the junkyards for Dana 60s and 70s. Check TDR#24 for installation tips and supplementary info to what is in the factory service manual.

I am kicking around the idea of swaping my 4. 10's for 3. 55's in my 97 chassis/cab. Since I don't do any pulling anymore and do a lot of highway driving the 4. 10's are to low, I need BETTER fuel mileage.

Wanna swap?:D
