It may have changed since years have passed but my understanding of US Gear is that it is strictly mechanical. With a Gear Vendor it shifts out automatically when a low speed is reached, approx 20 MPH. On mine I have a switch in the floor that I can tap with my left foot to shift in or out. That is when you have selected the manuel mode. In the automatic mode it will shift in and out. In at 40 MPH and out at 20 MPH. To avoid rough shifts I keep mine in the manual mode. When it shifts in, in automatic mode if you are not paying attention and don't hear it attempting to shift in and don't let up on the accelerator the shift will be rough. The switch in the floor is the old headlight dimmer switch. I like the quieter engine at 500 less RPM. At 70 MPH I am turning 1500 RPM instead of 2000. NO savings in fuel. Why I do not know.
