FED UP with fuel prices?

Got some $3.00 a gallon diesel the other day....

i have been looking at swaping my 410s for 354s. my cousin though told me about gear venodrs overdrive and how good they where. so i am now looking at that as an alternative. ive read the info on their site and have read about other aux ods. so far i like the gear vendors the best but im curious if its worth it. how reliable have they been? what do they cost? was it worth it? that kind of stuff. please let me know what ya'll think. thanks matt

check out usgear.com,they have adual range auxially transmission. you can go either20%overdrive or 20% under[choose one not both] shifts like a two speed. rated for higher towing capacity. i don't have one but I am interested in hearing from anyone with some experience with either.

Man I feel your pain. Anything over 70 MPH and have fun watching the fuel needle sprint towards empty like a New Orleans flood "victim" heading to loot a liquor store.

i looked at that one and i dont know about it. it didnt seem as well built as the gear vendors. i am open to all options and opinions though and want to hear feed back from those who have them. hotshots?

i installed a gear vendor on my gmc 3500hd, it has a 4. 63 gear ratio. the truck has 12v/nv4500 running gear that i installed. if not for the gear vendor, the truck would be slower then christmas, and have little hope of fuel mileage at anything above 50mph. i installed the unit myself, and would do it again. i considered the u. s gear od, but they did not offer one for the nv4500tranny[2wd]. i had a friend who had a u. s od on his old gm diesel, it was a solid performer. the thing that pi**es me about u. s gear, they have a habit of pulling products off their line. any questions, just ask!

I would not recomend the gear vender over drive if you plan on using reverse. I have one installed on my truck and it blew out backing up my trailer. I spoke to gear vender about it and they told me that I should use 4 wheel drive when backing up to take the load off of the gear vender. Mine was only in the truck 9 months but because it took me so long to install it the warranty was over. So my advice is not to install one and change your gears or you will be left stranded. Oh by the way their response to me was that it didn't happen very often so logic would say that the one I got was defective RIGHT and they should have fixed it or heoped me out somehow.

gear vendor

I put a gear vendor in my 1 ton dually 4x4 86 chev, 12v 6bt, th400, 3. 73 gears, back in `92. It`s the neetest thing since free sex and cold beer! it has been dependable for the last 16 years. only had to replace the controller once, changed the oil a few times, been a good unit. The best thing about the g/v over the other unit, is you can shift it while pulling a load full throttle, WITHOUT lifting. really great for splitting gears on a hill. I`ve pulled lots of loads 18,000 to 22,000 lbs, no problems. the reason they told you to use 4wd, was to make sure the o/d is OFF. when you shift into 4x4, the controller locks out yhe o/d. if you have a 2wd truck, you HAVE to make SURE the o/d is off, BEFORE you back up. I think their new controller is hooked to the back up light circuit, to do the same thing as the 4x4 switch on the t/case. Put in a G/V you`ll be glad you did. :-laf:-laf

You get a unit that replaces the rear of your transfer case but increases the length of it. You will also get a control box that will go inside the cab and a wireing harness. Also an extension for your speedo and other parts for that. After you install it you will have to get your drive shaft shortened so that it will fit.

It is not that hard to install but, once again I warn you about the reverse problem. That stuff about 4 wheel drive and overdrive off crap is just crap. Their control box is not supposed to allow the o/d to turn on at less that 20 mph or something like that. Last time I used reverse I came to a stop first. I thought it made good sense. The o/d is also supposed to dissengage when you come to a stop.

If my unit would have lasted as long as chipsters then I wouldn't have a problem but, when you get less that 20k miles out of one it gets expensive repairing them if you plan on using your truck.

I would also like to add that they do get kind of rough at times and take a little getting used to to drive.

I like my gear vendors 'till it breaks. At 191k I just ordered my third replacement unit. Got real noisy and reluctant to shift. Three days to build a unit, and another three shipping to me while on vacation. 600 miles from home, where my repair shop is, will have to pay to have this one replaced.

No issues with my US Gear under drive. I've got a few other posts here talking about it. Its a great unit, all gear drive vs cone clutch of the GV unit. Also has a greater rated load, 33,000lb or so.

The gearvendor uses hydraulic pressure from a little piston spinning at drive shaft speed. It takes about 600# pressure to shift which for my 3. 54 truck was a little over 25 mph. There is a lag between shifts- more drive shaft speed/less lag. When in OD and speed reduces, the GV will downshift on it's own (due to loss of the 600# press). It's best to downshift intentionally because the auto downshift will get your attention. The unit is QUIET, a little automatic transmission tucked onto the X-fer case. I loved mine. 93 mph @ 2000 rpm with 32" tires. (GPS mph) 4th over was very similar to 5th straight which was a nice reliever for the 5th gear nut. The controller mentioned above was an on/off device that kept track of any 4x4 time. Once the front was engaged, the OD would kick out/lock out to protect the unit. The US Gear is mounted in front of the X-fer case and has no such limitations. I had a standard bed truck, which would not allow the US. Gear installation. Final power on the truck was 523. 7 at MM 04. Did I forget anything??? :)
