Factory manuel says change fluid every 10,000 I just changed for the 2nd time and I am still getting a lot of color in the used fluid. Fluid comes out very dark way darker than I like and when I clean out the pan with naptha I get enough color to make a prospector proud. I then clean out the high pressure filter and I get large chunks (ok small chunks) larger than I want anyway. Gear Vendors says that this is normal but I don't dig it at all. I am using Dodge trans fluid (same as for nv 4500) as the manuel says.

I drive hard but I try to make positive shifts with the GV and not abuse it.

Is this normal for the GV unit or do I have a problem.

Thanks for any opinions, answers or flames.

I use Royal Purple 75W90 in mine. The fluid is never dirty after 7000 miles. Have never found any chuncks of anything in either filter.

GLASMITHS; When I got the unit Gear Vendors said specifically not to use R P 75W90. I use this in my nv4500 with very good results and I wanted to use but have not yet how many miles have you had your unit and how many miles have you had R P in it? I am very interested in trying it and I have been trying to get some feedback from someone who is. Thanks

I have had the Gear Vendor for about 100K; BUT burned the first one up with engine braking about 50K ago. Since then I have used Amsoil first then RP the last 25-30K. I change mine at about 6-8K when the full flow filter is changed. Clean the screens ever other time. The problem with RP

or any other 75w90 with friction modifier in it, is the fact you CAN slip it very easily. What I do is kinda let up on the throttle and let it shift and then put the power on. It has never slipped like this. Sometimes I do make a harsh shift when accelerating with RV and the right side passenger does this :-{} .

So it is best all around to make "soft" shifts :-laf . And when this GV is gone I would never put another in. Will go to US gear or just back to stock and run the rpms high.

I am beginning to feel the same way about my Gear Vendors, anything that wants to eat itself like mine is cannot be the best solution to the gear splitter question. I will go with the U S Gear system from now on. The most irritating thing to me is the way you have to service the unit. If the unit needs service every 6000 to 8000 why make it a pain in the ... to do?

I didn't mean to flame the Gear Vendor as a whole. It is a good unit for a stock truck with auto/4. 10. It would be kinda difficult to tow a heavy load without it; since you cain't use od, and the GV allows you to s p lit the gears. 7 years ago we didn't have all the power options that are available today. So I equipped it with what was available. However, if I had been told that engine brakeing would kill the GV; it would have been a US Gear instead. As a matter of fact the installer showed me how to use the GV and PacBrake together. :eek: :{
