I have 3. 55 gears and 35" tires. I will be towing a 8000lb trailer so I am thinking about 4. 10 gears. What should it do to my mpg when not loaded? I only tow a few times a year, but it is my daily driver.
To each his own. I tow a much heavier trailer with 3:54 gears, that is my intentional choice. It gets great mileage, allows it to cruise easily on the flats, as for hills and such, that is why they call it an "automatic?.
Maybe for max loads going up hill , 4:10s .
But my preference is to keep the 3:54s & bump up the power , then you can tow & have millage , almost like having your cake & eat it to , that does not happen too often .
I have a 8,500 lb. trailer, 3:54 gears and most of my pulling is in the Colo. Mtns. I don't need any more power, go over the top of monarch pass at 57 mph. I don't think you would like the results with lower gears. Add Edge tuner or the likes instead.
My trailer weights almost 8000#... ... ... empty! Unless you are towing in mountains, I think you will be ok occasionally towing. The only thing I notice about tall tires and 3. 55's is running direct drive on two lane roads at 55-58 mph.
To each his own, but I would definatly pull the trailer a while before throwing gears at it.
when I tow it is in the sierra's. So the gears will help out. I did the math and 4:10's put me as close to stock final drive as possable. Power is not the issue.
I have the 3. 55 in an 03 hop standard 6 speed my trailer is 15. 500 Lb. plus 100Gal fuel tank in bed of truck. That is 800 Lb. I run all over the west. I have no trouble in thr rockies are any place. If you go to 4. 11 you will give up MPG when runing empty.
I think that would be a mistake. I ran 38" tire with 4:10s and it was great, jumped up to 4:88 to get closer to stock and my mpg really went down. I only say this because it was almost an 8mpg diffrence. .
