Uncle Miltie and Dudley Moore passed on.

No kidding!!!! I called them today to set up policy under my name for the 97 (see sig) and to get off of my mothers insurence. They said it is not a privete passenger vehicle, it's intended use is commercial WTF:mad:

Which insurence company is a good one to go through with the best rates for a 20 year old male (me)?

I think they filled you full of !@#$. If it's one ton or less you should be able to insure it as a personal vehicle.

Half the farmers in the world use a cab/chassis w/a flatbed.

Try again, sometimes you get a dud...

I called to be sure. . no problem as I suspected.

I have insurance through Geico, they told me the same thing when I bought my truck. Called back the next day and talked to someone else and guess what, i have insurance. When I made the original call, I told the girl it was a dually, she said what is that, I said a pick up with 6 tires. She said that they couldn't insure it because it was not intended for personal and highway use.

Insurance?

I have never heard of this one before. You mean 3,000,000+ owners of Dodge, Ford and Chevy 1 ton trucks can't get insurance - that bull.

I switched to Progressive Insurance about 3 years ago from either Farmers for State Farm, can't remember which. Very good rates, and very good service. Had a damage winshield and it was replaced at no cost. Progressive has a $0 deductible coverage on glass if you ask for it. Had a 90 mile tow at no cost (closest point to get transmission fixed). So am very pleased with their service. They were cheaper than anyone on my 1 ton 3500 dually, boat, Jeep and 5th wheel. They were NOT cheaper on my homeowners policy.

I really recommend shopping for insurance just like shopping for groceries. Try at least 5 different companies every 6 months. You can save HUNDREDS of dollars for the same coverage. When I was in California AAA was very cheap. When I move to Arizona they were VERY EXPENSIVE compared to everyone else - go figure.

same here

I had the same problem with a 91 1/2 ton. . They said it was over 5000 GVW and it was not insurable as a passenger vehicle. Thier argrument was it could still be used as a heavy truck and thus was not acceptable.

Had traded an 83 S-10 for the PowerRam. Now they had insured the S-10... go figure!

I've noticed that you can get an online quote for insurance for that very reason. You have to call them and convince them that it is for personal use.

On another note, I noticed a few months ago that my truck is registered with a GVWR of 18,000. Not sure how that happened. I realized this after I payed my registration a year later instead of 4 year like normal.

Wonder if that would hold water if I got a ticket.

I'm not really defending Geico but they DO NOT have a history with ME for not paying claims.

I have always recieved a check in 5 days or less and they come to me for estimates. All I have to do is tell them where the car is.

I had USAA before and they non-renewed for claims that were no fault of mine. Geico seems to have excellent rates. I get a 7yr/100k warranty for <$100/yr. I really can't complain.

I dunno about the anti-motorist stuff. Post some details or examples.

They have lobbied heavily against speed limit increases and are extensive purveyors of "junk science" on this issue, funded research into speed detection technology (for law enforcement), purchased radar and laser guns for police departments, have been known to drop coverage for using radar detectors (albeit years ago) and getting speeding tickets, and other stuff in this vein. Basically doing whatever ill-thought thing they can to increase their profit margin and to hell with us.

A coworker and I were discussing speed limits the other day.

Why does europe have the autobahn and the like. . High speed throughways?

The US is bigger than all of europe combined and we go everywhere under 75mph. why?

Maybe we should have a thread on it.

I could have something to do with the strict requirements to obtain a driver's permit in Europe.

Over here... ... ..... you don't even have to be able to READ the signs. And the road test is a joke.

Most of the people driving around DC are having enough trouble at 55+, I sure wouldn't want to be around them at 75+. :--)

the 500mi of open road between Salina,KS and Denver, CO where I got a BIG ticket is no danger to anyone.

Long, straight, and empty except for the KHP!!!

Disclaimer: I'm not that old! ;)

From what I understand this was put through by the Feds a while back. The stated intention was to conserve fuel durring the energy crisis. I don't really know if this was the reason the politions passed it though. . .

I doubt it would ever be repealed now, since the states make a bit of money this way. It also give some bored cops something to do. :(

Mark,

I did just the opposite. I dropped Geico for USAA. USAA cut my insurance by about 40%. I couldn't argue with that. Never had a problem with them. I've only needed a winshield repaired though.
