Gen 3 5.9L EGR

When was and how is EGR implemented in the 5. 9 engine? The 6. 7 I used to own was external hardware. I'm trying to understand how it was done in the 5. 9 but not sure. . ? Thanks.

Thanks for the input, I wasn't sure how it was done but seems a few diesels have had EGR added over the years. Before my 6. 7 (now "repurchased by Chrysler & destroyed due to DPF problems) I had a 6. 5 GMC that had an EGR valve which caused significant black smoke, it always ran cleaner and better without it. Assume Smarty is the fix for a 5. 9???

Don't forget the retarded valve timing contributing to the "in-cylinder" egr on the later 5. 9s. The smarty really can't do much about the egr effect on the 5. 9. It doesn't get ride of the late injection event and it can't do a thing with the valve timing. It can advance injection timing which helps. The only way to rid a 5. 9 of the egr is a good cam. And the smarty will significantly increase smoke no matter what program you run or what other mods you have done.

The only year 5. 9's had EGR on the Dodge's was 96-98 california models (5 state IRRC)
