Gen 3 starting vs Gen 2

I have noticed that my 2004 has to crank over quite a few revolutions before it starts as compared to the 2002 I used to own. Both are/were stock, it just seemed that the 02 fired up more readily than the new one. Has anyone got any news on this or is it just an anomaly of the truck I bought

It's typical. The 3rd Gen has to build more fuel pressure.

More eng electronics. Third gens have to get valid signals from all sensors before cpu allows it to start. All new electronic diesel engines have to crank a lot longer.

I'm still adjusting to the longer crank time. I still think it'll fire up as quick as my old 12 valver would. End up having to hit the starter twice bacause I let the key go too soon.

On the 2nd gens, the injection pump was mechanically connected to the crankshaft, so it could start firing as soon as it started cranking. Because the 3rd gens use common rail injection, the injection is contorlled by the ECM, which gets it's timing signal from a crank sensor. The sensor only outputs once per rev, so you have to crank it longer for the ECM to establish the timing. Hope I got that mostly right. If not, I'm sure Ryan can correct me.

If I give my 96 just a little pedal when starting, it will fire on the first rev, everytime.



Just yesterday my 05 took at least 6-7 revs, about 3 seconds to fire up. . much longer than usual. Motor was hot, only off for about 25min... hmmm i dunno. . fuel filter has less than 2k on it. . hmm

its hard for me to get used to also , I was spoiled with my 90 model, started as soon as you touched the key in that truck, didn't even seem to spin just start,, the new one takes several rev's before it thinks of starting

There are a few differances in the 2nd and 3rd gens that take some getting use to. The 3rd gens don't seem to fire up as quick and when you get in and out of the throttle they have a slight delay to allow the cp3 to back off.

My Brother asked me that question one day in the driveway. He fired up his '02 in a half second. Mine took a few cranks. Always thought it was just building pressure in the rail.

I find leaving the key "on" for a couple seconds before cranking seems to fire faster, guess we are waiting for the "boot sequence"

Thanks for the answers guys, I'm glad that mine isn't an isolated problem. I was just worried about extra wear on what we all know is an expensive starter.
