Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) GEN dash light???

My dad's '96 CTD has a dash warning light poping up wich says "GEN" does anybody know what this means? It comes on after driving for about 3 minutes. Pull battery post to reset, drive and happen again.

My first guess would be an alternator problem. What does the voltmeter indicate? Should be around 13 volts or better when running. If it is 12 volts or less, have the alternator and batteries checked. Could be just a bad connection to the batteries or a bad ground.

Could be your battery temp sensor/connector/wires located under driver's side battery tray.

Have him pull the wires to the heater grid relays and drive it. If I forget to shut mine off (hard wired to a toggle switch) the PCM will take the alternator off line until I shut the engine off, turn off the toggle switch and restart the engine. His relay(s) may be stuck on.
