Gen One potential

Looking into possibilities of cranking a gen one up for a friend. between the intercooled motors 91. 5 on and the non-intercooledpre 91. 5 what have some of you guys achieved in horsepower and torque and what did it take (changes and cost)?

Just like any other project, You'll get out what you put in. The easy and cheap stuff is in the stickies. The big HP comes from the normal stuff like bigger Injectors, Pump mods, Turbo's and other Air improvements. But when you go big you will start finding weak links that will cost more than the power upgrades. But do press on. :-laf

For numbers, I think I can safely say that with 'bolt-ins/ons' you can easily expect 300 hp and 700 tq. The items include pump upgrades (several small but very effective items) all without removing the pump, turbo/collar, injectors, intake, exhaust, and timing.

You'll want gauges too.

For somewhere around $2000 you can get all of the above, effective doubling your power while keeping the same highway mileage.

For another $400 or so you can install a good converter that'll actually be able to get that power to the ground. Can't forget the transmission.

I started with a 518 auto/OD and quickly was looking at converters because the truck would barely start to move by the time the engine wound up. I switched to a 5 sp because I got a good deal on a parts truck and needed more than just the trans. I love the direct power and MPG of the 5 speed.

IMHO for work its hard to beat the 5 sp. For play, the auto is easier to drag. The 5 Sp is not a quick shifter.

I think this is significantly a personality/personal preference issue. With $$ you can get/build a good transmission either auto or manual.

If your going for the cheapest way to get to 300hp. Get a non-intercooled with a getreg. Put on a hx35-16 turn some screws, do some grinding and watch the guages. More than that start saving for clutches, turbo's, injectors and an intercooler.

TDR member "glhs" has a real nice 1st gen. i think he is pushing close to 500 hp, and i think from a stock block, but i could be wrong.

oh yeah and it'll run a mid 13 sec 1/4 mile, and its a five speed. pretty sweet
