On a last minute decision to head to Bristol Tennessee for the nascar race. We are in a campground with out electric and they say its ok to run portable generators. She says some build dog houses around them with plywood or a blue foam board. Will this hurt my generator and is this the best way to knock the noise down?

As long as you don't restrict the inlet air and outlet air from the gen set you can do some sound deadening, units mounted in motor homes etc are enclosed but have an air intake (grill) and usually discharge the hot air out the borttom. Be careful that you don't restrict or misdirect the exhaust fumes. If they have no elect. I wouldn't worry about the noise. Hope you have fun at the races. bg

After the recent hurricanes we recently had quite a few fires and explosions from portable generators being enclosed with plywood and other materials. The fire departments put out the word to never try to quite down a portable generator with home made materials. The generators in motorhomes are designed differently to allow for proper ventilation of exhaust, heat and gas fumes. I would suggest a Honda quiet run generator instead.

I take a annual trip to Talladega and we have the same set up. Build a wall that you can put between you and you trailer. Make it 2' taller and 3' wider than your generator. Foam will also help. Do not build a cover or box around it!!! We had a some one next to us that had a 2500w covered on 3 sides, ( had about a 12" air gap all around ) woke up in the morning only to find the gas tank had melted down and around the motor and generator!! It had a 5 gallon tank on it. I have a 18hp twin 13,500w that I use for back up at home, 7 gallon tank, when it runs out of gas, the tank is pretty warm, all I use is the wall. You will find you will here your neighbors more than your own.
