The Internals Of A Dpf Are Ceramic, they Are Long Straws With One End Capped With Tiny Little Holes In Them Very Similar Material To A Home Ceramic Water Filter, and They Can Be Reverse Flushed With Water If They Clog Up (i Am In Australia And We Have Cleaned Seveal Out

In addition, they have 2 or 3 precious metals designed to react to heat and burn away the soot during the regeneration process... a lot like some small heaters... .

Our trucks are designed to put the DPF through a regen process on the truck... .

The DPF on a class 5-8 truck is designed to be removed and cleaned... . the correct process as outlined by 2 of the larger manufactures require you to put the DPF into an oven with a time bake cycle... this time back cycle has been designed to bring the DPF up to a temperature to burn off the soot and leave it as an ash in the filter... . too much heat damages the filter and too little heat won't convert the soot to ash and turn it loose... the next step is a specific flow test to back flush the DPF with a specific amount of air at a volume to remove the ash... and return the filter to service... the classes I attended offered no method to clean them with water..... but that might work..... I just don't know if it will...

salstrip... . I don't doubt your comments...

I'm just saying I went to a class that taught is the proper way to service these to meet our EPA requirements... . and that's what I stated above... .

Not to step on your toes here... but class 8 trucks still do regen's. yes they are made to be cleaned, but in theory they should only need to be cleaned based on maintenance intervals.

""Not to step on your toes here... but class 8 trucks still do regen's. yes they are made to be cleaned, but in theory they should only need to be cleaned based on maintenance intervals. ""

The class I attended mentioned that no manufacturer of class 5-8 trucks had designed their engine controls to send the required raw fuel down the exhaust to create a regen... . and the examples sighted by the instructor showed us several brands of equipment used by various engine builders that do not have the ability to test for soot buildup (back pressure). Instead they were designed to rely on removal and cleaning at pre-set levels. .

The class I attended was put on by Donaldson the filter people who also are building retro-fit kits that are now required in CA. . There thoughts were that these systems would be out of warranty soon and the after market (us) needed to understand the care and service of these products...

The DPF its self on the larger trucks were built in several chambers, one to work as the filter, another to function with the EGR valve to reduce NOX... . the chamber designed as the soot filter would remove and was designed to be cleaned... .

I've since personally been under 3-4 trucks looking at the clutch systems... . (thats what we do) and have not seen any sensors connected before or after the DPF...

We are looking into the purchase and installation of this equipment for future use on these filters... Since I'm still in the learning process and gathering information process please share with me those truck builders, or engine builders in the class 5-8 trucks your aware of... . As I still need more information... .

Thanks. .

double post

Dear Jelag,

For some reason my post went in twice ,I have no doubt there is a proper way to clean them,We didnt have the availability of an oven ,temperature control facility, etc,we had a water blaster, and a truck that was in limp mode in the outback,we pulled the DPF cleaned it and we have been fine ever since

I can only speak for Cummins engines from experience. But the ISX & ISM are both equipped with "dosers". The after treatment assembly does have sensors in it(5 if I remember right). We take temp readings before and after, along with diff pressure, and out let temp. midrange engines are the same set up but with out the "doser". They are equipped with HPCR so they can just change the timing for a regen.

Now the retro kit that you are talking about are not quite the same. and they do not regen iirc.

Then you get to Clatterpiller! That is the biggest mess I have ever seen.
