Geno's heavy duty drain plug

I just bought one and have not installed it. A couple of members on another thread have stated that theirs has loosened up after driving (one member lost a couple of gallons of oil). The nylon washer that comes with the heavy duty drain plug was called into question. I bought this thing because of what I read about the stock plugs cracking. Now I hear that the Genos HD plug comes loose while you drive :( Anybody have any experence with this plug? I need more feedback before I install this thing.
 
I just did my eighth oil change today with the Heavy Duty Plug. I have had no problems. I really don't remember what kind of washer came with the plug, but I bought 6 OEM washers at the dealer... . ugly pricing... . and have been swapping them out every fourth change, even though they still look new.
 
I put the Geno's plug in ( 1 1/8" drive I believe) with the magnetic tip during my last oil change. I thought the washer was from Cummins, appeared to be the same as the one on the OEM plug. Anyway, mine's still tight after about 800 miles.

Mine is doing fine so far, I've never noticed anyone of my plugs ever getting loose. 40 ft/lbs sounds weak for tightening it but there is alot of threads and there fine so I figure it's componded.

The OEM sealing washer has two sides ( obviously ), the all rubber side to the pan and the "metal" side to the plug. If installed backwards, the rotation of the drain plug will peel the rubber off and it will tend to loosen. In my readers rig section I have a photo of the washer. It is easy to get backwards. The dealership mechanic (TDR member) told me about the difference, and that the OEM washer should last a long time.



DC went to the current style of plug so that it would break instead of warping the pan if overtightened.



They change lots of oil there and have no problems with pan or plug damage but they tighten to "seat of pants" torque.



I use a SuperPlug and it came with an OEM washer.

It's a keeper in my book...

The Cup Smoothie and the IRRGANG Billet Drain Plug. Both From Genos, both "must haves" in my book.



I use the OEM/Dodge/Cummins washer and torque to spec. In fact, I reuse my washer, replacing it every 4th oil change and I never have had a leak. Countless thousands of miles.

When I got my truck, the plug looked like it had been attacked by vise-grips too many times. I considered Geno's HD plug for a replacement, but decided to go with the Fumoto valve, for the convenience. No mess when draining. :) No leaks either, I like it. :D

I wonder how many mess this up? I looked at the OEM sealing washer that came with my HD plug from Geno's and it is not real obvious that one side is all rubber and one is rubber and metal. After looking at your pictures and looking closily at the new washer I can see the difference. I wonder if the guys that were having the problem had it on backward? Thanks for the heads up. I could see if an oil changer at the dealer installed the new sealing washer that it would be a 50/50 chance of it going on correctly.

I just ordered the "New and improved" Genos plug with the built in magnet. I have used my other genos plug the past year and it was always as tight when i removed it. I am guessing the new one will work fine as well.
 
FINGER TOUCH ENGINE OIL DRAIN PLUG

I just change my oil the first time and put in the Finger Tough Engine oil drain plug. I guess I should get underneath now and see if it has loosened up any... I doubt it. In a way, I'm looking forward to the next oil change to see what that drain will be like.

I have over 10k miles with the HD Genos plug and no problems.

The hex bolt shoulders are 9/16"... . HEY BigSaint what plug you got with 1and1/8" WOW!;)

i use the geno's drain tube/plunger type. 40,000mi on it and still tight and very convenient. i also bought the magnetic drain plug but have not used it. has anyone actually used this? is there any residue/smudge on it?

I believe the Geno's magnetic plug is made by

Super plug. They make magnetic drain plugs for all type of vehicles.



Last time I talked them, if you order 20 pieces, they'll give you

significant discount. I believe the cost went from like 21. 00 each to 16. 00 each. Maybe someone can arrange a group buy for

TDR members??

What shendren, said. I changed mine about 2 weeks ago and just removed the cap, screwed on the hose and out came the oil. No leaks or mess. I drained rather slow but that gave me time to get the filter off and clean things, fill and reinstall the new filter. Removed the hose and put the cap back on. It seems like the hose was waxed or something cause the oil did not want to stick to the inside of the hose is all came out and acted like it wanted to 'bead' like water does on a waxed vehicle. I like it!!

I have the finger touch plug, but I did drill 4 holes near the head to let all the oil drain out. No leaks and easy to use in the past 25K.
 
I'm sure there's a thread on this that I missed, but I'll ask anyway... . what's the reason for switching plugs? Is it because the original is inferior or because you're tired (like me) of having oil dripping down your arm?... or another reason?

One of the TDR articles indicated that some members have had the oil plug fracture when they changed their oil. The heavy duty plug would never do that. That is why I bought it.
