hey guys, need some information on a road in georgia if anyone can help. next month we are taking a lone trip to the northeast, first stop we will be going up hwy. 129 N near helen,GA. at unicol state park. leaving it and going to virginia from I-85. yahoo maps & mapquest gives me a route from helen to virginia to take hwy 75&17 south to get to I-85. if anyone could give some info. on hwy-75&17. we are from down south and no hills, I will be pulling a camper for the first time in the mountains.

I believe your route should be 75alternate (coming from Unico you would go left at Robertstown on 17 for not more than a mile or two and you turn left off 17 to alt 75) at the intersection of alt 75 and 129 you go left to Cleveland, GA and stay on 129 till you get near Gainesville, GA and follow signs going to I985. Go south on I985 heading to Atlanta and I985 will take you to I85 and just follow the signs heading north to South Carolina. The I985/I85 area is about 40 miles north of Atlanta, GA. When you get to a GA reststop get a state map and you will see the road I've suggested. Hope you have a good trip, Dave.

RCrosby,

GA Highway 17 south is about the most direct route to I-85 from Helen. Traveling south on GA75/17 through Helen, turn left on GA17 at Sautee. It will be mostly two-lane, but the road should be fine for your towing. You'll go through several small towns, so don't expect to hit interstate speeds. The junction with I-85 will be at Lavonia, Georgia.

If you're only going to Unicoi State Park (from the south), you won't ever get into the worst of the hills. Helen and Unicoi are on the southeast side of the Appalachian ridge. And Highway 17 south will take you further from the mountains.

Sorry, Snellville-Dave, but your routing (back through Gainesville to Atlanta) would result in about 4-times the distance. I wouldn't go that way for traveling I-85 north from Helen.

Hope this helps,

John

An Alt. route is to take 17 N up to 64 in NC and take 64 east toward Ashville and then pick up I 40. Its a little more scenic but a little more 2 lane till you get to 64. The roads are good though. I've taken that way to Ashville a couple of times pulling the 5ver with no problems.

Have a safe trip.

Walt
