I need to know how do you overfill the transmission by 1 quart as recommend.

You will need to either pop the shifter out of the top of the trans. Or jack one side of the truck up to run the fluid over to the other side to do it.



To pull the shifter. Unscrew the hold down screws for the boot and pull it up the sick. Then remove the snap ring. Then lift shifter stick straight up. Reinstall the opposite way.



Make sure trans is in neutral when you do this.

I Finally got a round to over filling my Getrag this weekend

3. 5 qts plus 1 I think/ hope.



WOW what a difference!!



The Under 1500 rpm trans coming through the floor noise in 4th gear is greatly reduced. Plus seems like less noise in all gears.





It helps to have another set of hands to pop the snap ring back on as you put down pressure on the collar and shifter.

I have an auto so I've never tried this, but one trick I read about was to thread a 90 degree fitting into the fill hole, and then a short length of pipe into that (angled up of course).

I have thought of this, and I think on my next change, I will pull the left PTO cover, drill a hole, and then weld one of the threaded dohickies (that you put on the exhaust pipe for post turbo installation of the thermocouple), and weld it over the hole. Then after filling the transmission up to the factory level, plug that hole, then go to the other side and put in your extra quart. THe plug from the boost line fitting ( out of the manifold) will work to plug the dohickie. If I do it, I will try to post pics. I pulled the shifter and it is a BIG PITA to do alone. And pulling the left PTO cover will make it a lot easier to access, as it is a bit crowded on the right, esp 4x4. Hope this wasnt too confusing. I imagine you could use just about anything to weld on to the hole, as long as the plug has short threads to not interfere with the gears.

If I'm not mistaken the top bolt on the PTO cover is an open hole. You can pull that out, and fill thru that, or install your "doohickee" there.

Hey Guys, Maybe I'm missing somthing here but I just filled till it overflowed, put the fill plug back in, reached up with a 11/16 wrench, took the top bolt out of the access plate beside the fill plug, pumped in one more quart, put the bolt back in. Now if that don't work I have a quart of oil floating around somewhere.

Will, nope your not missing anything, you got it right. Filling the extra quart thru the top bolt of PTO cover is a piece of cake.

What oil are you having success with? Not wanting to start an oil war. I am going to be doing some repairs on a first gen and would like some "good" info.

Steve, my owners manual says to use 5W30 synthetic. Seems like the most mentioned is Mobil 1. That's what I use. Someone recommended Castrol.

I use the high-dollar AMSOIL 5W-30. I also have the fast coolers for additional lube.
