A while back I posted about my 93 G-360 trans being hard to shift from second to third and third to fourth. The only way to get these gears was to first move the shifter into the fifth/reverse gate. In addition to my truck having this problem I read of another in the TDR magazine with the same trouble. After fixing this I would like to reply to my own post.
Upon removing the shifter via the snap ring at the top of the trans, I found the spring that supplies the upward pressure to keep the shifter supported in the cup was broken. The small portion of the broken spring had fallen into the shift linkage inside the trans but was easily accessible for removal. I was able to carefully remove the broken spring and install the new spring from the top. This means without removal of the transmission from the vehicle. Prior to carefully winding the new spring into position it is important to remove any burrs as the top cover of the trans is alluminum.
After this repair and a fresh fluid change with Mobil One I am pleased to report good performance from G-360 with 125,000 miles.
