What is the most you could be safe at overfilling this transmission? I have heard 1-2 quarts. What would be the best fluid to fill this with?

5w-30/ 80w/ 75-80w -90

Factory fill is 3. 5 quarts. Most agree with 1 to 1. 5 quarts overfill max. I've run 5 quarts (1. 5 over) and had leaks from the top cover. I never had any leaks with only 1 quart overfill. Not everyone has experienced leaks when running 5 quarts. The preferred lube and factory recommended is 5w-30 synthetic engine oil. Although James and others have had good luck with 85W.

Hey, I have a top cover leak too! Maybe its only that "extra" 0. 5 quarts (I(I added 5) and I don't have to spend $$ to fix it. :) I use high quality 0w-30 synthetic. While a few do use gear oil, I think all live in the South. I would stay with the factory recommendation myself, especially if I lived someplace with cold winters.

Regards,

I have also heard 1qt over is the max. If you add more space to the housing, however, such as a pto filter, you can over fill by more…I use the factory recommended oil.

Love the TDR just what i was searching for today, drained the Getrag and well she looked a little molassady dark but peeked up in the case and all is clean and shiny... .

just finished up and well i got all(3. 5qts), but the last half quart in and it started puking on me so i quickly put the plug in, how do you get that last half to full quart in, i did have the assembly off inside the cab around the gear stick but there is no plate nor anything i can see where you can fill the transmission up from inside the cab.
So where did i miss it at????

okay, cause i was like looking and had my headlamp on and i was like i don't see a thing here i can take off to put oil in this thing, does it matter which side i take a bolt out of, i don't want to screw anything up thats for sure as its running perfect.

Paychk i pulled all of that off and didn't see anything that i could take loose and pour into the top other than the boot covering the bottom of the shifter and i was like im not touching that its not bothering me LOL... . is that what your talking about, for all the time it took to take out all them screws i would rather take a bolt out of the side of the thing first.

Wyatt,

I overfilled my transmission thru a top bolt in a side cover like JLEONARD says. I did this by inserting a tube into the spout tip of a gearlube bottle then putting one end of the tube thru the bolt hole and flipping the bottle upside down. Then carefully squeeze and watch for fluid to come out of the hole in the transmission cover when it's full. Don't try to tilt the truck to get even more in. If you put too much in, it can leak out the front on a downhill park and soak the clutch. Not good.

On the fluid: My truck orginally had ATF in it. I went with gear lube and it proved too stiff in the winter. It forever to shift. Too much lube on the synchros I guess. Drained that out and went with Redline MTL which I love for winter and summer.
