I know that 5w30 is what your supposed to use, but I have a couple cases of synthetic 10w30 sitting around. Is it thin enough? I wish I could use the 10w30, not doing a whole lot else with it, that way I don't have to buy any after I rebuild it.

Thanks, Steve

CAROLINA CUMMINS-

I have used a few different weights of oil in the Getrag, with no side efects so far. A synthetic 10W30 should be ok. I ran 5W50 synthetic in my 93 W350 because I was towing 10K+with it. If you get into the 15w40 or 20w50 range, you may see some problems with it, maybe not. Half the trucks I get have gear oil in the transmission for some reason. Guess some fleet mechanics cant read a manual.

i couldn't tell you the differnce... the guy i bought my truck from siad he never checked the oil and it poble was low or dry... and he got 200,000 on the truck pulling a horse trailer so i can't see a slightly different oil effecting it. BUT like i said i have no idea

Steve,

When mine was rebuilt, I put in 10w30 synthetic. Been in there for the last 12k now. I don't think you'd notice the difference.

Just my input,

Dustin

Steve,

Since you're in NC and have fairly warm temps, I would think you'd be ok with 10-30.

Up here in the NE, I think I'd have a problem on those very cold mornings... ...

I've been using Mobil 1 10w-30 for about a year. I think being a synthetic, it flows better cold than 10W-30 dinosaur oil. Shifts a lot better cold than the gear oil I ran in my last Getrag, anyway. :D

I've just switched from 15/40 dino Rotella to 5/40 synthetic Rotella for engine oil during cold weather. I will probably try it in the Getrag the next time I change oil and Geno's filter in it. I hope that it turns out to be a plus for both applications.
