My appologies if this information has already been posted. I looked through MANY Getrag posts and found EXCELLENT information on the rebuilding of the Getrag. I am about to remove my Getrag for noise, vibration transmitted into the shifter and flake in the oil. I have owned the truck since new and the problem has come on fairly quickly so I am certain that it is not 'normal Getrag operation. '

Trans shifts fine so I believe that the synchros are in decent shape. I am looking for a source for purchasing bearings and for any help with part numbers in the event that I can not get them from the removed bearings and races.

There have been several opinions on pilot bushings vs. bearings. My truck is a mid year 93, 4wd, not sure what is installed. What is the preferred replacement without having to machine the crankshaft?

Seems standard to replace the clutch while the trans is out but I have never had a clutch problem and if it appears in decent shape it is staying in.

Truck has 216k, towed an 8000 pound trailer for approximately 50k miles. Engine is fairly stock, power wagon injectors and a 16cm housing.

Thank you!

OK ... ... . Many projects, commitments and a job change have come before fixing the 93. I now have the trans out and uncovered the source of the noise. This is a picture of the rear countershaft bearing. Truck has always had Mobil 1 5/30 with the extra quart and has had several fluid changes throughout its life. I will add to the post as the rebuild continues.

Ouch! Did the race spin in the housing? Looks like you have a job. I think mine did the same thing, but I haven't pulled it apart yet. I got the NV4500 in place and running, so the transmission goes in the corner..... well, near the corner..... well, in that general area of projects to be done.....

Thanks for the reply HH. Yes the race did spin. Not being a tight press fit race it did not do a ton of damage other than the shim pack in the tail housing being destroyed. I will get the trans apart and test the race/case fit and make a determination if the case is still servicable or if I need to beg for that trans on your floor! :)

Dang! That is one toasted bearing!

I have a "noise" developing in mine too at idle in first. But mine might be due to 820 ft/lbs... . ;)

Well done! Keep the pics coming!

OHHHH!! C'mon!! Surely you weren't pushing on the throttle THAT hard!!!! Wouldn't that kind of pressure bend the floorboard?!?! :-laf

I toasted mine pretty good. IT's been coming out of 5th for years, but this spring(when Cody was driving it) it got to where it wouldn't go in 3rd, and then it starts howling like a cat's got his tail in the yoke..... I've not pulled it apart, yet. I think I'm scared, a little..... It was loaned out to a good friend who's '01 puked the VP. I don't think I'll loan it out again. I'm missing my 1/2" rachet, some wrenches, my grease gun, and my 2. 5lb hammer, which is a killing offense. I did steal back my 24" crescent, which he swore was his..... but it has my initials stenciled on it, soooooo... . And don't get me started on the flats I've fixed on this thing!! I've had every tire on it off and patched, but the right rears, and yesterday I had to air up the inside!! Ugh. That is the end of the Lend/Lease at this place!! I've never had it on the dyno, but it'd push out 28 psi boost before I cammed it... . I've got all the guages pulled at the moment for a remodel... . speaking of which, I need to look for the factory tach position... .

Oh, now I understand how you found the gauge thread! :-laf

Yes, stealing a hammer is a very serious crime.

Be sure to post pics of your rebuild too.

Ahhh, yeah, we'd better coax Jet Tech into posting his... by the time I get it done, it'll be obsolete, and hard to find parts... . And by then we'll be doing 3 deminsional holographic repairs from remote, robotic garages... ... of course, our Cummins will still be running... ... probably powering large, yet fast, flying machines..... like our Dodges would be if they had wings. . :D

Ok, I'm gonna go lay off the Vodka, now. G'night.

:( uh-oh... This sounds too close to home. This past weekend I made a 1100 mile trip in the 91. 5 pulling a trailer. By the end of the trip, I started getting a very noticeable sound/vibration.

Just out of curiosity, did yours vibrate worse in some gears than others? The vibration in mine is most noticable in 5th, but is evident in 3rd as well... worse in both gears under power. Fourth gear seems fine (I'm guessing because it's 1:1).

getrag rebuild

I wrote quite a bit about the getrags in the past . I recommend that all who are interested read my posts on the subject. Half of the failures are due to lack of lubrication from oil leaks. They are going to leak so the best solution I have found is to check the oil often. Use 4qts of HD40 engine oil and a half qt of auto trans fluid. I have the prototype dip stick and tube now completed . I may produce some later this summer. It is like a dipstick tube used on the automatic transmissions. I can post pictures if anyone is interested.
As for getrags ... . I rebuild them and have all the parts that are needed.
It normally takes me a week to get one done. If interested call me for details. 301-219-7399 up till 3am est.

Another big problem is warped and off center line bellhousings and engine adapter plates. Read my previous posts for more on this.
