I noticed a vibration in my trany when pulling up a steep hill, like a steep freeway entrance ramp,at 20 to 50mph. It only happens when I hit the Go button real hard. Other than that it shifts smooth and feels tight. The vibration is so hard that I lift to 3\4 throttle where it goes away. I am pulling a6000# car trailer. Am I in trouble? I think I read somewhere about the input or output bearings causing this. If that's the case would it be less costly to have them replaced before it craters or should I wait? Thanks in advance.

Preleeguy,
I just rebuilt my Getrag, that's how the noise started then slowly got worse. I had to replaced the input shaft and the countershaft bearings. I replaced all of them while I was in it, buy the seal and bearing package because that front countershaft plug is hard to find separately. Make sure it isn't clutch slipping before you rebuild the trans, I've seen a couple of these slip under hardload. I found the input shaft for under $300. 00(new) by the way.

Thanks Nacho,Did yours start out as a vibration under heavy load and get worse? How rapid did it get worse and how much was the fix? Did you do it yourself or have it done?I don't believe it's my clutch. Ive had sliping clutches before and it was nothing like this. I was saving for a paint job this summer,I hope it doesnt delay that too long. Thanks again.

Hi preleeguy.

You might check to see if 4th gear ia any different than the rest. In fourth the countershaft and all the gears are just floating along with no load. The input bearing is under less stress and the mainshaft front bearing is not rotating at all. If it still happens it probably is the input or output bearings. If it goes away then it could also be the countershaft bearings or mainshaft front bearing but the input and output bearings are not eliminated.

Preleeguy,
Mine started in third and fifth under load and I only let it for about a week. The third and fifth noise is caused by the countershaft bearings but I wouldn't count on not needing a new input shaft, the rear of the shaft is the race for the output shaft front bearing and is usually worn. You can get reman shafts but I've heard negative stories about some of these, I only paid $500. 00 for the new input shaft and the bearings and seals. If you haven't rebuilt a manual trans and aren't afraid to try just get a GOOD service manual and take your time. Good Luck.

Nacho,
Did you get the service manual from Dodge or directly from Getrag? I am also getting some noise, sooner or later I'm going to have to get into it.

Preleeguy,
I work for a dealer so we had the manual, but I would buy one if I didn't have such easy access to one they're good manuals with torque specs, tolerances and pretty good detailed directions. You'll need a press for a few of the gears and bearings. Allow plenty of time so you don't have to rush, with the trans on the bench it's a good time to put on a filter.

NACHO,
Thanks for the good info. I don't have any noise in the trans. It is still quiet and shifts well. It's just this vibration when on a hard low speed pull. It could be in the drivetrain and not the trans. Will a clutch slipping couse a regular vibration? The RPMs don't seem to go up when it happens. I'll baby it along for now and see if it gets any worse. Where would a person get one of these manuals and how much do they cost. I'v worked on machinery transmissions before and figured I would need a press at least.

preleeguy.
It's about 3:30am woke up and can't couldn't fall asleep, so I am not sure whether I am dreaming or not. Some time ago it seems to me that one of our members noted that when he was under his truck he noted that some of the bolts and nuts on the crossmember by the transmission and transfer case were loose on his truck. It may be worth checking out - you never know. I did a search on the forums but couldn't find anything, but then again I may be dreaming.

With regards to the service manual (I know I am not dreaming) I bought mine in Feb/00 for $87. 74 (CAN) from a company in Canada by the name of Dyment Distribution Service Ltd. The Canadian phone number 1-800-387-1143. I got the number from a local DC dealership. You should be able to get a US number from DC dealership in your area.

Good luck.

Thanks Al,Hay ya know your right! I remember that thread. I never connected with my prob though. I'l check out that crossmember and let you know. That could be it. This weekend I tried to duplicate the prob and couldn't. In the end it could be the clutch. Thanks for joging my memory. Later.

Hey Preleeguy!

I was one of the members who encountered the the loose crossmember bolts on my W250 along with another member who posted the original thread regarding a D250.

The funny part of the loose bolts was that they never made any noise indicating that there might be a problem looming. I realize this isn't helping you with your problem but might provide some confirmation on what it's not.

BTW, does anyone have a trashed Getrag input shaft that they would be willing to part with for use as a pilot shaft when I do my clutch in the future? I would be willing to pay shipping.

Thanks! Good luck!... ... Keeno

AL,
I just tried to call Dyment Distribution Service LTD with the 800 number you gave and I could not get through. Is there a US Distibution Center anywhere?

Thanks, Stab

Stab,
When I called them I had the same problem-if I remember correctly an automated answering machine came on and after I responded nothing happened. I tried the following day and got through. Just keep trying eventually you should get through.
