I'm going to go through my 89 5. 9 and getrag before puting them in a ford . I was reading alot of threads :--) Does some body know of a complete list of getrag problems and fixes and place to get the parts for them. I would like to go through it and fix all the problems now!

The significant problems with the Getrag are for the most part known and solved. If you have 4x4 then you can over load the transmission and the output shaft is supported in the 4x4 so that you can run the transmission to complete destruction. The load capacity of the Getrag is on the edge so if you bomb much you will shorten the life somewhat. If you install the engine and transmission at the steep tail low angle as it is in the Dodge, you will need the extra quart of oil in the transmission to properly lube the front end of the transmission. Probably a good idea to use the extra oil regardless of what/how you put the unit in.

New bearings and a good inspection of the inner parts will show what the condition is as of now. If the mileage is high you might want to replace the input shaft. Stick with domestic parts not imports. Standard transmission or Man Tran (and there are others) can furnish all the parts you need. Don't even think about parts from Dodge.

I put 470k miles on an original Getrag with minor repairs over the run time. I pulled the transmission and then found that I had differential problems not transmission problems so they can last quite well if maintained.

If you have specific questions, PM.

... I pulled my getrag down with over 200k on it to only find nothing wrong except it needed some endplay taken out. . and my problem was that I needed to rebuild the dana 70... spit the carrier shims, spun a bearing... ( Thanks for the help/advice James)

There are many people here who tow heavy and have turned up motors in front of a Getrag and they work great. . I change the oil in mine every other oil change and always over fill through the shift tower. . and when I pulled it down other than normal wear mine looked great. Now I will take it down sometime next year and put bearings in it but for a trans with over 200k on it and I am not nice to it, it has held up well... the biggest thing from what I have seen and heard is overfill, dont flat tow and when they start to make noise or shift hard pull them down fast before you are buying alot of parts...

I second what James said, and if you need help he is a great source of information and advice as are many other people here... . good luck...

Thanks for the info!! The transmission I have has around 230,000 on it and the engine it is a 2wd transmission that I'm going to put in a ford f350 4x4 and use a divorce mounted 205. The transmission shift great and has no noise but I want to go through it while it is out of the truck. Do they have problems with a nut on the main shaft comming loose?? I work for a dealer that sells dodge's so I get cut on the prices or is there a better place to get parts from like bearings and gaskets from? THANKS

Getrags don't have loose nut problems, that is the later NV4500. There is a good chance that you only need to reshim for preload and run it another 200k. If you need parts, I seriously doubt that the dealer will cut enough discount to match aftermarket parts and the aftermarket parts are just as good if you stay with domestic, no import stuff.

I would recommend BeaverBrook trans. He's located in PA and ships anywhere UPS. He's been doing this for decades and he does all my work. he works on standard transmissions, t-cases, and diffs. he just freshened up my Getrag. His number is 888-886-0665 and the owner's name is Dennis. tell him Kris sent ya.
