Picked it up Monday night, put about 100 miles on it. Shifts well, and it's pretty quiet now. It definitely needed a clutch and the bearings were quite toasted. He showed me the pieces but i forgot to take pictures. Just swapped fluid and overfilled this evening, should hopefully be good on this thing for a while now. Time to move on to the next project; air intake and window seals.

I've been watching this thread. Thanks for posting. My Getrag is developing a whine as described, mostly when downshifting from 4th to 3rd, but noticing it now in nearly all gears. Worst was after a long cold weather drive (2hr) in 4th/5th then hitting 3rd (makes me wonder about the statement made about bearing being lubed only in lower gears????). I also thought about release bearing, but don't think so. I'll start with diffs, transfer case, etc. Just wanted to thank everyone for the tips/info.

Yeah mine had whined in 5th at highway speeds since the day i drove it home. I honestly thought it was normal. When it started doing it while downshifting i knew it was time to pay the fiddler. I have to take it back to the shop tomorrow because it's making a rythmic ticking noise sometimes goes away when you push the clutch in. The saga continues... I'm not very well educated on these transmissions at all but i will say it sounds like you may be needing a rebuild very soon.
