Does this look like I caught something before it was a problem? One of the pins that holds the shift fork maybe looks as though it was working its way out. The other pins are flush with each rod. This one is sticking out. Can I just tap it back in there? Or is there something else I should do?

Bill, I'm sure that the prevailing wisdom (ie mysteryman) would tell you to tap them back in or rebuild it with tight pins. The pins on mine were backing out, too, one up and one down. I opted to purchase a rebuilt top cover assembly. I think a more important concern than the pins backing out is the play in the forks relative to the shift rails, and the thickness of the forks themselves.

BTW, I like the "industrial tractor motor" beige :D

roll pins

My guess is that the pin was longer than needed and it was only driven to the point that it didn't stick through on the top side. Examine all the clues before doing anything at all. Be certain that it is through to flush with the top side and if it is, don't do anything. There will be wear/witness marks on the part sticking out if it was deeper and has backed out.

I have not heard of a roll pin falling out and causing a problem. Not suggesting that I know everything. Just my two cents worth.

I agree with James,

That is the middle fork and the roll pin is just under the end of the gear shift lever when it is installed in the shift tower. You could try tapping it back and worth to check tightness. If it still has considerable drag in the pin hole, trim it to length. Make sure it is flush to the top of the shift fork boss, so it doesn't interfere with the shift lever, If you are concerned with it.
