Hi all,

I'm having two issues with my Getrag. The first is that sometimes it likes to hang in 5th when I'm downshifting. A good hard shove gets it back in 5th, then it comes back out normally. Doesn't do it all the time, but it is a regular enough occurance to be annoying.

The second is when downshifting 5th, the gate lock sometimes prevents shifting into any gear. If I pass the 5th/Reverse gate when it does that, it will unlock and go into gear then.

Has anyone had either of these problems and is it just fork/shifter wear/adjustment or do I need to do exploratory surgery? No other issues with the trans, shifts fine otherwise and no odd noises.

Thanks,

Joe

Getrag

Joe,

I had the Getrag in my 92 CTD. It failed early in life even before I started hauling a truck camper and hadn't even towed anything! Hard shifting and eventually a bearing went out. Thankfully it was still under warranty and the dealer replaced it. I then began to learn of the "issues" with the Getrag failing far too often when mated to the Cummins. Furthermore, my dealer said that it couldn't be repaired, that it had to be swapped! I'm sure there are some repair resources out there, but if I still had my 92, I'd probably have the NV4500 in it my now. Best of luck to you.

Sounds like a shift fork or something similar. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined, you should be able to do it yourself, provided you have the facilities to do it. Dropping the transmission is harder than taking the top off and looking at the insides. Of course, you cant check everything by removing just the top, but you can get an overall view of what it looks like.

The reapirs for the Getrag have come a long way since 92- there are quite a few shops that can fix it, and parts have come down a bit since then. BUt you still have to be careful of the unscrupulous shops that are after your money and not much else. (the Diff Shop comes to mind).
