On the shop floor right now is a conversion kit from Standard trans which includes their trans and an adapter kit from Advance adapters. I understand (after much reading here) there are other (probably better) ways to go but needless to say I already have the parts. Any words of advice or voices of expereince that can help me out before I dive in tomarrow? I'm working on a 92 4x4 and the instructions that came with the parts are sketchy at best. Many TIA.

You are really going to be surprised how easy its going to be. I have installed 4 kits for customers. The only 3 tips i have is to measure the shift boot hole and cut it smaller than your original. Cut it before you install the trans. You might have to modify your transfer case linkage so it won't hit the floorboard. Good luck! Its a great upgrade!

Hey scott, you might want to take care of the 5th gear problem while the gearbox is on the floor. Also if you tow alot, there is a cast tail housing available that is alot stronger for about 100bucks. I opted for the full one piece nut and staked it at eight places on the shaft as I don't tow much. The 100% cure is a fullly splined shaft, but big bucks. Mine is a 99 with low miles and was still a snug fit. As for install, as soon as I got it ready, the getrag stopped growling with a extra quart of oil. Can't bring myself to change it if it isn't broke yet. Good luck and I would like to know how the project goes. Tim

Thanks for the advise Tim. This is a Standard Transmission and Gear rebuilt unit which already has the fully splined mainshaft and gear locker in it. We should be good to go there. I considered the cast tail housing as this truck does tow but it's still a stock 160 after all.

So If I'm understanding everything I read correctly it's as simple as shortening the collar on the imput shaft a little, dry fitting together and checking t-case linkage, cut a bigger hole in the floor and shove her in with this new rubber mount and spacer block. I hope it's that easy, I'll keep you posted.

I got my kit from Quad 4x4 and the video + instructions were great. I've got my flywheel at the machine shop now and the transmission should be arriving today. I'm going to try and install it this weekend.....

I'll let you know!

Scott, when I got my bellhousing from Advance Adapters there was some info on removing the seal in the tail shaft where the transfer case hooks up. Did your standard trans come that way? Tim

I'm not sure. The NV4500 need to ahve trans fluid in the tail housing to lube fifth where the Getrag does not. The trucks that came with NV transmissions rely on the T-case to seal the oil out so I figured it would be the same here? Perhaps not, I'll have to look a little closer. I didn't have time to get to it tonight. This weather is bring hay season upon us so the projects keep getting pushed back.

Scott,

I believe the seal in the tail shaft is the same as the NV5600 I did.

Some guys remove the rear seal & let the void in the front of the transfercase fill with the gear lube from the transmission.

I don't like this method. The best way I think is to turn the splined coupling down to accept the seal in the back of your NV4500. It's an easy repair if you have a lathe & if not wouldn't cost more than $25 to have a machinist do it for you. Very little material needs to be removed to make it work properly

I used silicone on my spline before sliding the coupling in so the gear lube doesn't seep past the spline.

To each his own... I prefer both units sealed. Removing that seal is risky if you ask me.

Have fun!

Thanks for the advice Marty. Like I said, they just dropped this thing off and I haven't had time to look at it yet but I do have a lathe and what you've done sounds simple. I'll look into it when I get the project rolling.

Well I finally got the whole project wrapped up. It was just as easy as was described above. The rear seal worked exactly as Marty described by turning a little of the splined coupling. The bracked supplied for the transfercase shifter was correct and had plenty of clearance.

Thanks for the advice from everyone. This $35 subscription was the best I ever spent :)
