Getrag owners, I need to know if from the factory, there was an 'access' door/ hole siliconed and screwed shut about the size of the getrag top cover right above the top cover in the floor of the cab??? As in an earlier TDR issue article titled Yankee Ingenuity? Where they cut a hole in the floor of the cab to pull the top cover of there getrag off, without pulling the transmission. I ask because it looks as if that was done to my truck before. If this wasn't factory, then I'll proceed pulling the carpet and floor mats out, then see if I can get my 'access' door open, and pull my top cover off and see if I can find whats making 5th gear howl at the moon. This would seem easier than pulling the transmission and t-case.

Also, with the top cover off, what can I look for and or repair/replace? Thanks. Bill

Bill,

I know what you're talking about. My friend has an 80s Ford that has a transmission floor pan that can be removed to take the cover off the transmission. However, our trucks didn't come like this. It should be a solid floor, so to answer your question, it's not factory.

Hope this helps,

Dustin

Bill,

I have taken the carpet out of my 92, 4x4, 5 spd a couple of times and the only wholes in the floor are, one for the transmission shifter and the other for the transfer case shifter.

By the way a lot of us with the getrag are running with one extra litre of oil in the transmission.

Dustin, Al, thanks someone must have been in the transmission before. I will pull everything out of the cab, try to see if i can keep the seat in it. As has been said before in this forum, a 5th gear howl could be a cheap fix if taken care of soon. I will post pics. BTW Al, I've tried 1 extra quart and 1. 5 extra quarts and ATF overfilled, still mr getrag cries out in 5th gear. Again what can be done to the transmission with the top cover off? Bill

Hi Bill,

I'm guessing you aren't going to learn a whole lot with the trans still in the truck, other than inspecting the condition of the gears and the top cover.

What I've found is when one of these suckers starts howling, the first thing you'll notice as you teardown is the main shaft will have a lot play in it. The shaft is two pieces, and when the trans is set up properly, it's preloaded/shimmed to keep the shaft pressed together. When a bearing fries out and/or you lose the preload, you can grab an end of the shaft and make the whole thing move side to side in the case. When it's preloaded you can't.

What I'm getting at is with the input shaft in the pilot bushing and clutch, and the output shaft bolted into the transfer case, I don't think you will be able to check it for play. Plus the problem is most likely a bearing (I'm guessing the rear) and you can't see those until you remove the shaft from the case.

(If it was a D-truck MAYBE you could drop the driveshaft and carefully pry against the mainshaft from the side of the case and see some play - not sure. )

If it's a countershaft bearing, I don't know. But those seem go more quietly until the shaft drops down.

Hope this helps. Remember this is non-professional, common sense theory from fixing a couple of these. Take it as you will...

new pics in readers rigs

Well darn, I found the TDR issue that I was talking about, they did a different repair with the top cover off. I sure couldnt do anything to it with the top cover off except look at it and take pics. Thanks Andy you were right!! So my point is I have some new pics of my getrag with the top cover off in the readers rigs. You can see the gears and top cover and shift forks, and see how deep 5 qts of 5w30 is. . Bill
