my trans is sick 1st and 2nd synchronizer is failing unable to get into 1st at all and now i have to double clutch or come to almost a complete stop to ingage 2nd gear i hope it will last till next summer.

i have read some post that some of you have rebuilt there trans just wondering if this has been a home job or have you had some else do it and if done at home how hard is it to rebuild.

Will it last till next summer? I doubt it.

Home job? Definitely yes for some. Not hard if you are a mechanic. But it isn't a piece of cake either.

Quite a good many post recently on this.

Naw, convert it to a NV4500 and send me the "worthless" Getrag. :-laf;)

There have been some very good threads the last month or two in regards to the Getrag and rebuilding thereof.

I have had good luck with the Getrag 200,000 just rebuilt mine. I ordered parts from Blumenthals out of OK. parts cost aprox 225. 00 for bearing and synchro kits. I run 50 weight Rotella synthetic in both transmission and transfer case and overfill 1-2 quarts over. on the transmission. I choose to fill through the top bolt in PTO Cover. I found my transmission in great shape when I pulled it down. I replace the clutch at the same time, I choose the CON O FE for my application. I am very happy with the choice monetarly and performance. All parts to include rear main seal cost right at $950. 00. Labor is Cheap when your turning the wrenchs the service manual provides all the guidance you need to know about the maintenance procedure. I would agree with Jimmy it isn't a piece of cake but it isn't worth 1000-1500 in labor cost either. That is the beauty of owning one or two of these 1st gens there is nothing you can't do to maintain it if you have a few basic wrenching skills.
