Is rear seal replacement a doable weekend job?

I guess I've been spending too much time under my truck & have too many questions.

I purchased the Eaton/Fuller Transmission Filter (P/N FULK1444) from Geno's Garage last week while ordering a Mag-hytec diff cover.

My question is, on which side of the transmission do I install the filter with respect gear rotation? I didn't realize that there is a PTO covers on both sides of the trans offering two potential mounting locations.

Also, the original Getrag is approaching 150,000 miles and the trans oil appeared to be a bit sparkly when I drained it. The metal flakes appeared to be brass or copper in color. I know I'm living on barrowed time but from which parts are these flakes most likely being produced? Other than the flakes the trans performs well.

1992 W250 5 spd. "sparkly" Getrag, 3. 54 gears, Banks "Stinger Plus" kit consisting of 14cm2 wategated housing, 3 1/2" exhaust/muffer, pyro/boost gage, K&N, 2 1/2" Skyjacker front suspension lift to clear 305/70R/16 Goodyear MT's

KEENO: Put the filter kit on the right hand (passenger) side of the gearbox.
The right hand side is the sling-off side of the mainshaft which throws off the lube into the filter cannister. The lube drains thru the filter (which catches and holds the fines) back into the gear case thru the center of the filter.
Without a filter you'll see a small amount of brass/bronze colored fines in the lube. That can be attributed to normal wear of the syncros and their tapered clutch rings.
I don't think you're on borrowed time... keep your lube up (add extra for the added capacity of the filter cannister and cover). My Getrag has 154k, and the filter, and no problems.
At least your 5th gear is on tight.
Regards.

Hey Old School!

Thanks for the reply and enlightenment once again!

I'll complete my filter install when I get home from work tonight. Install on the right side (passenger)... . Roger, that!

Old School, what are you using for lube in your Getrag? I've been watching the great Amsoil VS LE debate in the other forums and I'm throughly confused now. I have some 5W30 Mobil 1 sitting on shelf from my 1/2 ton gasser I just sold, I thinking about putting that in the Getrag to flush it out until I can make up my mind on Amsoil or LE.

Old School, this trans still seems tight, so I was surprised to see the flakes or fines in the oil. The output shaft has no movement, no gear noise in any gear but I'm uncertain how to diagnosis input shaft bearing wear. I have read in the TDR that overfilling the trans a bit will get more oil to the input shaft bearings. Any further thoughts?

Good to hear from you! Keeno

KEENO: I have run Castrol 20W50 in the Getrag since '94. I'll drain and change the filter every 12 months. My fill method is to pump in the lube (with the plug ready) and screw in the plug when the fluid begins to run out.
Any more lube would probably be lost thru the front or rear seals.
Input shaft excessive wear can be felt or heard by a "growling" when running the truck and feathering the throttle to allow the shaft to float in the bearings.
This by the way is not guaranteed, as the mainshaft and cluster may emit the growl as well.
If your box seems tight, and has no excessive noise, sleep well.
Regards.

Keeno,
Is that the part number from Geno's or a part number from a transmission shop? What is the "new" oil capacity of the transmission with the filter?
Thanks.
Doug
