Pro-Tec

The previous owner of my truck used Pro-Tec additive in the whole drivetrain, and it is still there. I have not continued using it in the engine because of the cost. Can't give you positive results other than my Getrag hasn't been out yet, is quiet, and shifts smoothly. From what I've read here, that's somewhat unusual with 112K miles. Here's the link if you're interested. http://www.2pro-tec.com/

A friend with a pulling truck says he went from two passes per rear ring & pinion to 2 ring & pinions per season after starting to use the stuff. He also says the rear axle used to be hot to the touch after a pass before and now it stays cool.

The synthetic is a good choice and if you wait around for a couple of days, you're going to get the Amsoil indoctrination speech from about a dozen PPL that come in here. Not to say that it's bad, not at all, but there are some others that are just as good. The main thing to remember here is NOT to change the weight. Thicker type gear oil here is not necessarily better. These Gettrash transmissions are VERY sensitive to lubricant viscosity because of the way they were designed. The front and rear bearings are tapered bearings and they run with a . 006 preload on them all the time. The center bearing (where the two shafts meet) is also a tapered bearing. That being the case, it's hard to get a thicker oil to that center bearing, especially when it's cold outside. When I rebuilt mine last spring, I actually put in an extra quart and a half of oil in hoping that it will help to lube that bearing. In mine, that bearing didn't fail, it was the one in the rear but that center bearing is a weak point just the same. I think that these transmissions will last a long time, IF, you service them regularly and don't abuse them. I don't think they can take much abuse!... ... ... ... ... ... ... . Racer:cool:

? for racer brown I noticed you said you added extra lube oil to your trans. I have heard a few others say that one of the probs with the getrag was that is lacks enough oil compacity. What is your opinion on this?? The next question is don't your fill these trans similar to the way you fill a rear end where the oil just pours out?? if so what is the best way to get more than the recommened amount in the trans?? do you just park on a hill with the truck on angle??

Oil Overfill.....Well,....

No Cowboy, I didn't park it on a hill to over fill it. Actually, I put the extra oil in when the transmission was sitting on my work bench with the top off..... :D I do, however, have a 90 degree street elbow in the side of the case and an extension nipple on that, (yeah you guessed it) it's pointing straight up with a cap on the end. It's going to be hard to get to it for sure when it needs some oil but with all new seals and stuff, hopefully I won't need to do that for a while. I park the truck in my shop (very clean floor) so I'll know when the seals start to give up. :p As far as the oil goes, I used Valvoline dura blend semi synthetic in a 10w40 weight. Yeah, I know it's heavier than the recomended weight but my truck stays in a heated garage most of the time in the winter so I don't look for that to be a problem. Anyway, time will tell the tail on that one... ... ... ... ..... Later... ... ..... Racer

I "overfilled" mine with an extra quart. The easiest way to do it is to remove the shifter and pour it into the transmission from the top. It's kind of tough getting the shifter back in (ie. a 2 man job), but that seemed to be easier than messing around with other stuff. Took about 30 minutes to do the whole thing.

OIL

I also have a street elbow on mine to get more oil in it. I have to keep topping mine up all the time as it leaks. I use Esso XD-3 Extra 0w40 in my transmission. It is a heavy duty diesel engine oil that is semi synthetic. My Cummins gets it for the winter months. It flows excellent a low temps. Which happens to be the case here most of the winter. I also added prolong transmission treatment at the last oil change. I hope it helps keep her together for awhile longer yet.
