I've been overfilling my trans, but bothered by not being able to check the oil level without losing the overfill. My idea was to use a Fast Cooler window (you can buy just the window without the coolers) to see the level. While at Scheid's event, I bought one. The window comes with a stainless steel plate to support it. Nicely made parts. Fit perfect. I just installed it this past weekend and refilled with 5 qts. Mobil 1. The level is a bit above the window, but I marked where the level was with 4 qts. (about an inch below the top of the window), so at least I know if I need to add.

It is surprising to see how much the trans oil is moving around while the engine is running. Tiny metal particles moving around in there, too. :( A Geno's filter is sounding real good, and I could put one in place of the other cover. From now on, I will drain the trans immediately after shutdown, before any particles can settle out. The shafts & gears had no noticeable play when I tried moving them around with the PTO cover off. Everything looked in good shape.

Hopefully this Getrag will live for many more miles!?

You could also probibally epoxy a magnet right on the window. This way you'll know when you need to pull it to clean it.

Just thinkin out loud. :D

That's a good idea, thanks. I may try that. Not sure why every drain plug doesn't have a magnet in it. Probably something to do with cost.

Now that I think about it, would there be any other harmful particles in a manual trans other than ferrous metal wear particles? If not, a magnet should be all that's needed to keep the oil clean.

Frtiz in any standard transmission is going to have copper or brass (cant rember wich one) but it is what the syncros are made out of(which slowly wear). This is also why if you leave transmission oil in your transmission for a long time then drain it and let it sit for a couple hours it will get real shiny looking.
