had to slow down to 65 mph, from 80-85 mph to get the 49 MPG, but still at the higher speeds got at least 43 MPG. Maybe at 60-65 I can crack the 50 MPG barrier! These are great little cars.

If you keep it down to 55-60 you'll beat 50 mpg. with fuel prices soaring my wifes tdi is getting even more miles and the cummins is looking lonely:mad:

Some gassers...

ain't too far behind. Drove a 2003 Corolla. It got 44+ mpg and was an auto running a steady 70 mph for 540 miles. 1. 8L with something like 140 h. p. Quiet, smooth, and quick enough. I bet the 5 speed will get ~46 mpg same conditions. I'll be getting one soon, not to mention at a good price! :D

a guy on the vw vortex web site got 60. 2 driving 900 miles on one 14. 5 gallon tank. It was fully broke in and on flat ground trying to be as easy as possible. Also just seen photos of a vw golf involved in a head on crash with a jeep cherokee, cuts and bruises only for the golf driver. These vw's weigh 3100 pounds and are very crashworthy. I would hate to be in an accident with a hybrid vehicle that gets only about the same mileage as my jetta!

emarsh - The Corolla is not a hybrid vehicle. You're thinking of the Prius (it gets around 50 mpg at around 70 mph cruising, and is about $6,000 more expensive than a comparable Corolla, not worth it IMO. ) I've driven it quite a bit, due to my current employer.

The Corolla is 130 h. p. (not 140, my mistake), and is 2,500 - 2,600 lb. Cruising at 55 to 60 mph, with a manual, it might get 50 mpg. But I still think the diesel Jetta is about 7 - 10 mpg better than the 1. 8L gas Corolla. The '03 Corolla is a heck of a lot better looking than previous generation Corollas.

I won't tell you guys what I'll get the Corolla for, but just to say that at 10 mpg better with a diesel Jetta, I'd never (ever) make up the cost difference. I think the average bloke on the street could get a nice Corolla for about $14k or so. I'm not sure how much a Jetta is, but I think its in the low $20k range (correct me if I'm wrong). And that price difference buys a lot of guys, less so though if the cost of fuel goes out the window. To each his own. The (diesel) Jetta is a heck of a vehicle.

I used to own a '78 Corolla. That thing would get 40+ mpg every tank. One time I even hit 48mpg! This was with a carb and 1200cc's of pure power. It sure doesn't seem like gassers have come very far since then. That car got passed around the family for 12 years until my brother took it to the junkyard with 280,000 miles. Rust was its' downfall but it was still running good.

My Girlfriend just bought a 2002 Jetta GLS TDI for under $19,000, brand new. There are definately some good deals out there, if you don't mind a 2002 instead of a 2003.

We also bought a 2000 Golf TDI. I had been looking for the used Golf for quite some time, but there just doesn't seem to be to many of them out there. The Golf will be my daily driver, so that the truck can rest up for racing season.

I am new to the TDI's though, so is there anything that I need to be aware of, or keep my eyes open for?

Thanks,

Ted
