this may turn out to be a good deal on a bhaf

New CRD in the garage!

I'm working on a real good deal right now with a dealer in Texas for a '06. I'm in L. A. He told me that I can't get the truck because of Ca emissions. I looked on the Cummins site and it says that the motor is 50 state compliant. Can anyone shed some light? This deal will save me almost $8000!! I know diesels are exempt from smog laws, so what else should I tell him? I went to a dealer locally to find out info, but he couldn't find anything out. He called a smog guy and he told me that diesels are exempt, it's the gas that must have at least 7500 miles before Ca calls them used and can come here. Can anyone help??

I'm not sure of the specifics of your 06 deal but i got about 9K off sticker price from a local dealer here in Vegas. If you can buy the truck you want in CA, just go offer them the same price as your TX deal and I bet you can get it. I believe you're right about the 50 state emission compliance. Shouldn't be a problem.

It has to be ordered from DC with the correct emissions package to be CA legal. DC does not build all the trucks to CA emissions specs...

I know you have to have at least 7000 or 7500 miles on it (can't remember which) before you attempt to register it in CA. My Girlfriend was trying to buy a new TDI Jetta and was getting hell for it.

I have been looking into that also.

I emailed tomeygun about it and he said he could get one, too.

the truck has to be ordered i think, but it does have to have a calif. emissions sticker on it.

I don't know if there is any difference in the trucks, but it does have to have the special calif sticker on it.

I called CAlif DMV and they said the same thing.

I expect to order a 2006 in one or two months, and out of state if I can't get a good deal here.

good luck. :) :D Oo.

I live in So Cal, and bought a new truck in Texas this last August. It took two months to get it registered after I started the process with the DMV. Diesel or not, it MUST have the California sticker on it OR you must provide proof satisfactory to the DMV that a vehicle you were driving broke down and could not be repaired (at a "reasonable" cost). DMV decides what is reasonable, and you have to provide original (stress the ORIGINAL) repair estimates from a repair facility where you broke down.

The 7500 mile figure is correct; the law has changed some though. A few years ago you could go out of state, buy a new vehicle, drive it for 7500+ miles, bring it into CA and register it since it then had enough miles on it to be considered used. Now, you must show them the original sales contract which will specify the number of miles on the vehicle when you took delivery. If that number is under 7500, and you weren't in the "I broke down" situation, they will sell you a permit to get it back out of state!

I read through some of the information in the 2005 Mopar Service Manual, and there are some differences in the California trucks; none of the differences have to do with the heart of the engine, but there are additional electronics added to report specific problems to the driver or servicing dealer; nothing that effects engine performance or smog equipment.

I am like others in believing you can order a CA certified truck through a non-CA dealer. No one that I know has been able to get much of a deal on a CTD anywhere in CA!

Good luck. If you need more info, PM me. I'd like to know what you end up doing!

The p. o. box has been thought of, but I work for the CHP, so 'splaining that to my Sgt while running Texas tabs wouldn't fly to well. :-laf I still have lots of friends in Tx, so "breaking down" shouldn't be an issue. How about, let's see, I was driving my '66 Olds out there and the motor let go somewhere near Killeen, had it towed to my buddy's shop in Killeen where he writes an "estimate" for a complete overhaul of the motor, $2000. I decide to buy the new truck I was wanting soon anyways, so I might as well do it now and tow the Olds back. :-laf How's that sound?? ;) I just noticed something, I priced a 3500 and a 2500, both Megas, both Laramies with identical options. The 3500 is only $600 more (what's $600 when you're gonna shell out about $50k??), so I think I'll go with the 3500. I drove a 3500 Mega and it rode suprisingly soft for a 1 ton, still smoother than my '03 2500 Hemi. I was impressed!! Still ain't made up my mind between short bed Quad Cab or Mega Cab (I want the smaller truck, family wants Mega room... ... )

Just did a little more research, I optioned out identical trucks, except 1 is a 2500 and the other a 3500. The 3500 only costs $635 more. Duh!! I'm going with the 3500!!!

EHalterman,

I sent a PM a little while ago but my "sent messages" box is empty; did you get it? I don't know what I am doing!!

If the sales tax is paid or not you will still have to pay Ca sales tax. I bought a used CTD earlier this year. Mileage over 7500 when purchased does not need the CA emissions sticker. If it is new you will have to get all the CA stuff. Ask the dealer if they can sell it to you with 7501 miles on it (regardless of the actual mileage). It could be like it was a dealer driven truck. Just an option. Read CA DMV's website. I used AAA to register and they knew what to look for, just so I wouldn't be hassled by the DMV.

Hope this helps.

Santa Clarita?? Me too!!! I knew AAA had DMV services, but I didn't know they could do alot of stuff, as I heard they had "limited" services. So I could go there and get it registered? I knew I would pay the Ca tax.

AFurrh, I got it, and you got one back (I hope)

Another thing you might want to look at is the actual dealer cost of the vehicle.

There is an outfit called fighting chance.com that will give you pricing info on the latest vehicles.

I am still waiting for pricing info on the 2006 dodge ram 4x4 quad 3500.

As soon as that becomes available i will start my shopping.

they will actually coach you as to how to deal with the dealers, hence the name of the outfit. Oo. :D

EHalterman: I am also from Los Angeles, California. And, when I started pricing a 2005 Dodge 3500 Cummins, NV5600, 4x4, Quad Cab, Laramie, Long Bed, SRW... the dealerships in Cerritos, Huntington Beach, and San Bernardino all wanted 51K for the truck. I called up several dealerships in Texas, and the Texas dealerships were asking $12K less for the same truck. So, I went to Texas and bought my truck over there. Drove it back in 22 hrs. and I didn't have any trouble registering it.

Call Henson Motors if you need a quote. Ask for Larry Cooper.

No problems at all? What did they (DMV) ask you? Details please!! Now I'm really confused. Ever since that dealer told me what he did, I'm worried. But I wanna save a load of cash. I ain't afraid to go get it, but I wanna be sure I can get it to here legal, kinda important since I work for CHP. Looks like I'll be heading to Dallas in June as I just found out the national Oldsmobile Club is having a meet there. Would be cool to drive back in a new Mega!!

EHalterman: When I applied online through the Chrysler Financial website, Chrysler Financial asked me what state title I wanted. I asked for a California title. Henson Dodge sent all the paperwork to California DMV and I promptly received my plates.

If you call Henson Dodge, they'll answer all your questions. Ask for Larry Cooper. (800) 530-5337

They got a couple of sweet Mega Cabs over there!

Looks like I'll be making a trip to St Louis, tomeygun is gonna hook me up, gonna save me thousands, and that's for a Ca emissions truck as well!! Now to get the $$ ready... ..... THANKS A BUNCH PEOPLE!!! Man, I'm excited now... .....

bought our 02 2500 from a dealer in Texas, i live in southern calif. No problem as long as it is ordered as a calif emissions vehicle. We paid the calif sales tax, ordered the vehicle by phone and fax, I think it only requiered a $1200 deposit to get truck ordered. You specify which calif. dealer you want it delivered and preped. Must be paid in full (we did chrysler credit) befors it ships rail. Be aware, our local dealer sales manager was in no hurry to get it preped, I had to make a few phone calls. Saved about $7,800!
