Hi, I am Rick and I have a stock 97 dodge 4x4 5-speed w/ 168,000 miles, and every now and then I am getting a ticking noise in the engine bay usually when idle and noise sounds like it it is coming from between the frame and the block. Kinda like valve tapping, but from the bottom of the block? Has any one experienced something like this? Is there a fix? Or is it the valve and the sound is echoing off something?

Sounds like it could be your fuel supply pump. I have had the overflow valve cause the same noise. When you hear the noise push in on the pump diaphram and see if the noise disapears.

i'm curious about this to describe what you mean buy pump diapham when I had my head gasket replace my truck came back with a simialiar noise plus a pop noise coming out of the air filter it sounds like some one tapping there hand on the end of a pringles can lightly.

that may be a intake valve that's adjusted too tight, id look in to that asap before you burn a valve

thanks I will check got to put vavle spring in tonight anyway finally got the two springs for 4 gsk sorry 974x4 for stealing the thread for a second thanks guys hope you get your noise fiqure out.

did you ever get your noise figured out yet mine was all valve adjustment never trust a dealer to do any thing right even after you direct them in the direction you need they had number 1 cylinde set for a 99 up and the intake was tighter the . 08 and thats a 99 truck setting the rest where close to right but some to tight to get feeler guage into no consistency at all suprise I didn't waste a valve or two.

I set mine at . 008/. 018 instead of . 010/. 020. Last time I had a bad ticking one of my exhaust valve lashes was . 025. Adjusted, went away. But I will agree sometimes the lift pump can make a ticking noise, I think mine is due for replacement afterall I have 250K on the truck.
