In Oklahoma, between the heat, cold, and poor roads, batteries don’t last long.

I’m in a cycle of 2-3 years replacing the batteries in my 2020 Cummins and my 2016 Nismo 370Z

In the Z, I have best luck with “Factory” Nissan Batts

In the ram, I’ve read that batts made by Johnson Control seem to have the greatest feedback. But what battery?? They make thousands!

I’ve done optis , yellow and red, and not a fan.

I know this topic is essentially head butting a hornets nest, but ..I need to ask.

Was planning on hitting interstate for a pair, then got warned off!

Can’t afford Li ion batts at 750 a pop!

Thanks to all that help!

When my stuff is parked, I'm plugged into battery maintenance systems for three to 5 years. How many years you got under your belt with other vehicles and years in that same area... a year or two with non electronics vehicles?

I am running O'Reilly agm batteries in mine. Odyssey would be the best, I think, but the convenience of O'Reilly won out for me. I had one go bad within the 3 year replacement warranty (wouldn't take a full charge from my Odyssey charger) and the local store replaced both with no hassle.

I agree I have ran several East Penn Motorcycle batteries under Deka, Big crank and Drag specialties. They all have been awesome. The ONLY one of their batteries that did not hold up was one for my DR Brush Mower, it quit holding a charge. I also have a set of 12V Marine on my Boat that have been flawless for three seasons now.

IMO the best bang for the buck , and warranty is the Walmart Everstart H7’s AGM or lead acid , I went the lead acid ones , may go AGM next time , I believe they are only around $20 difference .

Who makes them?

Just can’t stomach seeing “Walmart” under the hood of a nearly 90 grand truck!!!

also, it seems like a lot of agm batteries are venting , or otherwise failing.

bought a new set of agm at orieleys and within a year, everything on top was corroded!

they replaced them and cleaned the cables as best they could, but wouldn’t give more than a 6 month warranty on the new ones.

maybe I’ll stick with the OEM batts.

I’be also been reading that the oddesey batteries need to be bought from an authorized dealer to have any warranty at all!

buy via amazon and you loose your warranty.
Seen lots of reports of failures as well.

You wrote "...within a year, everything on top was corroded." How often you checking? Everything that has a battery I own gets checked and maintained every month. Just curious corrosion has a lot of causes. Dielectric grease is good as a anti corrosion barrier. I did Command, Control, Communications Systems for lots of years and they need superior battery and ground quality.

Good luck with all your endeavors on your truck.

Maintained on maintenance free battery?
All you can do is look.

Everything was fine for most of the time, then one oil change, the tops and leads were all corroded.
Even used those non corrode felt pads.

been readying a lot of agm batteries are having problems lately.
Add to that how orieleys only gave me 6 months on the replacements means no more orieleys for me.

unless someone has convincing reasons to do oddessys, I am considering staying oem.

There are some battery "equipment" tasks that help. Clean battery terminals and cable clamps. Inspecting cables and terminations. Coating connections with dielectric grease. With all that, I still only got 4 years out of mine in my 17 Ram 5500.

Oklahoma heat and horrible roads eat batteries!
Has a Honda S2000 that required replacements every 3 years.

my 2016 370z Nismo, battery replaced last year, before it souls strand us,

in my 2010 Cummins 2500 again 3 years, no warning, then CLICK!!
From now on 2-3 year replacement is now happening.

thinking lead acid from now on with that kind of replacement schedule

East Penn as far as I can tell . No worries if you have the blanket around it , no one would know on that 90k truck .:D Or just go buy a more expensive battery that would be more fitting for your truck . My 2014 never complained.

Most places will only give you the remaining time on the existing warranty when you get a warranty replacement. Doesn't make financial sense for them to give you the full warranty when you just got the battery to be able to complete the warrantied period.

Years ago Auto Zone would give you the full warranty period on the replacement battery. I went through 3 batteries that failed at 2.5 years on a 3 year warranty before they finally realized how much money they were loosing and changed the policy.

The Everstart Maxx batteries from Walmart are 3 years replacement ,and additional 2 years prorated . Not sure there are any better warranties out there for a battery . Like you say Auto zone changed their policy , probably what 1 year replacement , after that prorated for additional amount of months ?

What heat??? :p Remind me to bring a sweater if I visit your area in the summer.

Seriously ... are you using the OEM battery blankets that insulate them from the high underhood temperatures?

Odyssey, and they don't make the high temperature rated Extreme for the 2020's, is just enough warranty to cover the 3 years. You get 5 years warranty from Batteries-Plus (My local store sells Odyssey and Batteries-Plus adds their warranty to give you 5 years) ... The warranty can be as low as 3 years from some parts store chains. The NorthStar, aka X2, is now an Enersys made battery.

Heat reduces service life at a rate of 50% for every 18°F (10°C) increase from 77°F (25°C)...

Well then the Odyssey is a no go.

yes I have the blankets, but every vehicle I have owned here in OK only last 2-4 years.
I am now a lot more proactive with batteries now.

nothing worse than being in the middle of nowhere and “CLICK”!!!

We also now have AAA on both the truck and the Nismo.

What about interstate batteries??

The new smart chargers are a game changer with battery life. If truck sits more than 24 hrs, I plug it in to help with the parasitic losses. There's probably no perfect answer to the problem of battery life. Keep connections clean, tight and charged to keep up with the losses. Is there a better blanket out there? Was pondering about making a better one with fabric that is used in oven mitts. Have used it to insulate a hydration pack, gives me about 2 hrs of ice. Thinking a double layer with something for outer cover would work since fabric does have a radiate barrier in it. JM2C.

I was wondering why they aren’t made with a silver Mylar outer skin to reflect more heat.

Gold Mylar would be best as NASA uses it on spacecraft, but it seems to be unobtainium.

the layer of 24k gold would be so thin cost shouldn’t be prohibitive.

summit racing and others sell it.

it could be sewn together to become a blanket “skin” over the factory blankets.
Add some spray adhesive to the inside and voila!!

Did I just come up with a sellable product??
:)

Yeah, I don't shop at Walmart, but bought some batteries a couple of years ago at Advance Auto. They asked me if I wanted the ones that have 3 year warranty or the ones that have a 4 year warranty. I believe the 4 yr warranty ones were AGM and had terrible reviews, so I bought the ones with a 3 yr warranty. The ones with the 4 yr warranty cost about $20+ more each.

ACDelco Golds have a 42 month full replacement warranty.

Here’s the Motorcraft warranty.
