Just got back from trip to Oregon. There you do not pump your own fuel, they have a gas jocky do it for you, any way get you started. Its the law. most times. But I was showed by one attendent in Salem,(Space age station) how to fill to the top with out the foam. When the nozzle cilcks off, waite for the foam to go away, pull the nozzleout,(just inside the neck), just crack the delivery leaver, lower the handle a little and let the fuel run in. (fuel will be clear, not airiated) almost as good as the kit made by spooled-up. can be filled right to the brim.

Works for me. But did notice that high pressure pumps,(truck stops) is very difficult to do this on.

:) yea, we don't pump our own fuel. The people keep voteing it down, seems we're lazy. The truth is it's legal to pump your own diesel here just not gas. As for your fillup technique, yep, it works. Just like pouring beer from a tap, if you don't want a lot of head let it run down the side of the glass ;)

We keep voting it down cause we're one of the few states (two I believe) left that have this law... we like to be a little different than everybody else (no sales tax either!). Secondly, it is a good source of low-income jobs for people w/o any real skills. Where else are they going to work? And yes, you fella's who are protective of your pickup, you can fill your own diesel even at a regular fuel stop... I fill 99% of the time at Pacific Pride (Card lock) so it isn't an issue for me anyway... I always pump my own #2, whether in OR or AZ.

Our women don't want to get soiled. :-laf Our station attendants are told to not argue with a customer that want's to be in control of the filling. We get alot of classic car guys & motorcycles that have some high$$$ paint jobs. It's a insurence issue. The state needs to put up a bond to cover an accident. Like Josh said it's been voted down several times. There is one other state that does not have self serve but I can't remember which one. crs

If you use the truck stop truck island no problem.

To bad it cann't be voted down. What kind of case would you have if they pumped gas in your tank? some of the fuelers did not appeare to have all the lights on. I seen a lot of people just sit in ther vehicle, I got out and made sure they put in #2. all but two let me top it off. The state is trying to stop unemployment, I guess, and thats good.

We visit a brother in law in Klamath Falls quite often and I've always filled my own truck at the truck stop, I was under the impression the ruling was for gasoline fueled vehicles only

It is, but many people are uneducated about that point, and don't care to learn. They think that just cause all stations are full serve, they're not allowed to leave their vehicles when getting fuel in Oregon.

As stated previously, you can pump your own #2, and even your own 87 octane at 99% of the places here. No 16 year old kid, or 35 year old HS dropout is going to argue with the owner of a $35,000 car or motorcycle about them pumping their own gas... if they do, go across the street!

I guess living in a small town where you've known the owner of the one station left in town since you were 10 helps too! And you can call every person who works their by their first name and buy beer on "I'll pay tomorrow, don't have cash right now Nid!" makes a little bit of a difference on my view of the law.

thanks for that info. I usually use the car/truck island and stay out of the truckers area (Flying J, Loves etc) in order to get a full load of fuel. one guy walked over, ask if I need help, i said no, he turned pump on, gave me the slip of paper and I did it myself. saved him some time.

One time I drove into Oregon and went to fill up and forgot about the law. The attendant came FLYING out of the booth and about grabbed the nozzle away from me. "You can't do that!" she exclaimed  I handed the nozzle over and didn't argue with her. She took her job a little too seriously  LOL This was at some station in the Mt. Tabor vicinity in 1990.

The only other state without DIY fueling is New Jersey.

Usually in Oregon I fill my own rig and don't get any guff from the attendants, but on trips to California and I'm tired I appreciate the free service when I stop for fuel.

Oregon doesn't have sales tax, but Washington doesn't have state income tax. The lucky ones live on the Washington side of the border and can have the best of both worlds . . . and yes the IRS does occasionally attempt to track down Washingtonians who buy big ticket items in Oregon.

GPS taxed by the mile

Read something in the paper today about Oregon testing a system starting in 2005 where vehicles will have a GPS system to track how many miles you drive so they can tax you per mile. Good ol California is looking into a similar system I guess. Looks like the government is going to try to keep tabs on how much we all drive. Any of you guys up in Oregon know about this system and how it's going to work? How much per mile? Etc?

CHRIST !! the next thing you know the damn government is going to tax us by how many breaths we take in a day... . "The new National Air Tax"

\Why should our prices be cheaper w/ no sales tax? Have you seen our property tax bills lately? Trust me, there is a tradeoff for not paying extra every time you go buy groceries or you next $40,000 pickup.
