Trans Swap

TST #5 plate question

I can't wait! Oo.

My transmission people called to let me know they have the new ATS transmission and Triple-Loc converter waiting in their garage for the install. This is supposed to happen on 11-28.

I have my new Edge Comp 'Drag' (pump wire connected) and the stock transmission can't even begin to handle it... whew!;)

I'm envisioning some real changes in performance here... can anyone that has had this conversion done to their truck tell me what to expect? (Please. . no transmission wars):{

Its 'a' gonna be a long week ahead!

You'll like it!

I'm not bombed to the extent you are, but even with a STOCK engine the ATS makes a huge difference. With your Mods you should be very happy.

I drove Clint's 2003 4X4 when I was at Wheat Ridge in Sept. All I can say is WOW!

OOHHHHHHH! You need to get the ATS 3 piece exhaust too. Makes it even more fun.

Congrats on your excitment. Keep us posted on the performance gain;) :D

I didnt even recognize my truck the 1st time I drove it!! Night and day, you will love it! Havent regretted it for one day.

Hey rrausch, I havent driven Clints truck, I think I need to give him a nudgin about that. :D

jrandol, Clint was out of town the day I drove it!:D

Maybe he doesn't even know! It sure MOVES OUT! I only drove it down to a restaurant on the same street the shop is on, but I did put my foot in it a little bit... just for educational purposes of course!:)

Tell me more!

I want to go the full ATS route (converter, transmission, exhaust brake, etc) but it is hard to convince the wife to turn loose of that kind of money while the extended warranty is still working - and yeah. they did replace the factory converter just a couple of months ago!

92,000+ miles on the truck; warranty is almost gone, and anybody's guess how long the transmission will last. Towing 11k all over the rockies.

Tim, that TripleLok and VB does make a big difference in a stock truck. From your signature, it looks like your truck is bombed, and you would therefore notice more of a difference, as with the TripleLok no power is wasted, and their stator is WAY better than the stock configuration. Before ATS my truck used to slog off the line, roaring loudly and not getting anywhere very quickly. But now my truck really scoots off the line! And lock-up is firm. No more slipping feeling from the TC!

At 92,000 I would think your truck is on the borderline to where it might be better to go ahead and do the Stage IV Rebuild instead of just going with a TripleLok TC and VB. Trucks with a low mileage trans can go the TC + VB route, without rebuilding the whole trans, and that will prolong the life of the trans.

On the other hand, you might just wait until your present trans pukes out. Since you live in Colorado, you are a little closer to ATS than the rest of us.

I got my Stage IV rebuild at 107,000 miles. I could have babied it another 10,000 or so, but I didn't want to baby it.

As for the wife... many guys have successfully used the "Well honey, the transmission's got almost 100,000 miles on it, I want to get it done so it doesn't strand us out in the boonies somewhere!"

Good luck!

You'll really notice a big difference, I've only had mine for less than 2 weeks and the previous comments are spot-on. Next weekend will be the 1st big tow so I'm anxious to see the difference towing.

My temps are running about 25 degrees cooler than stock and that's with ATF +3 in it now and I had Amsoil in it before. Also, my mileage is what it was with the TTPM set on fuel saver mode with it set in the #1 position now :D The stock TC was slipping that much and I didn't even realize it.

Enjoy!

You'll love it! Hands down it's the best thing I've done to my truck - makes driving it every day a true joy... I've had my Stage IV for 80k miles now without problems, and I tow, and race regularly.

With the high mileage, and the power you have, I wouldn't get just the VB and TripleLok. Get the whole Stage IV - you won't be sorry. There is also a 3 year, 100k mi, warranty that comes with it, so that's usually helps with the accountant (i. e. wife) too... :D

Let us know how it goes...

I am new to TDR this is my first visit. I don't know what an ATS transmission is but i read all the responses and figure that some guy named Clint is rebuilding trannys some where in CA maybe. I have put on the 4 in exhaust and I love it. I have had some transmission troubles but nothing serious. So I am reading everything I can so I am prepared when the day comes. I will watch for your reply next month after you run yours awhile.

Clint Cannon is the owner of ATS Transmissions in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He Originated the TripleLok Torque Converter, and many other innovations for the Dodge Cummins Transmissions. ATS manufactures all their own components in-shop, and I feel have done the most thorough job of engineering of all the Performance Trans. builders.

Hey Guys-

I picked up my 99 3/4 ton from the trans shop today with the new ATS unit installed. What a difference :D !!! Truck has 96k on it, and the difference in driving/shifting is incredible. This has to be the greatest thing since the cummins engine  . Not trying to start any wars... just a very happy ATS customer.

DSTARKEY

I don't think you will be starting any kind of war here; this is an ATS discussion topic. :)

Can you be more specific - What are the differences?

For the price of a triple-lok converter & commander, stage-4 rebuild, exhaust brake, Mag Hytec, etc . . I would hope to get more than a "good feeling" :)

Well... you are all making me feel goodOo. ... and bad:{ . I now feel confident that I'm going to be putting the 'pedal to the metal' with a big smile on my face, but with this excitement my . . now 1 week waiting period. . is going to feel like a month!#@$%!

I can't wait!

I have to drive an hours ride to get there, they will install the transmission upgrade and Triple-Loc as well as the 4" exhaust. The wife and I figured, well, this baby has to be tested! . . so we are heading out from there to the beach... about a 3 hours ride from there (maybe 1 hour with the new transmission. :D )

Hope it all goes well! I will definitively give a report on how it went.

Right now... feel bad. Today, I couldn't catch up with a buddy of mine in his '80 vintage' Ford 1/2 ton truck gasser due to the transmission slipping so bad... and I was only in level 1:eek: !

Things have got to change! I told him I would see him next week:rolleyes: (he doesn't know about the transmission upgrade)

Like most have said here, myself included... "It's the best thing I have EVER done to/for my truck" - you won't be any different...

You're just up in Falcon - come on down and take mine for a drive, or next time I'm coming that way, I'll let you know and you can take it for a spin at that time.
