Just wanted to thank those of you who have given me some very helpful advice in the past months concerning building a Dodge/Cummins for Africa. I thought I'd bring you up to date.

My truck is delivered. The dealer installed mopar flares and sold me an extra spare wheel.

Local 4x4 shop will start the following this week:

--install Skyjacker 4. 5" stage II lift (no flex)

--36 x 12. 5 x 16 Super Swamper TSL radials. (Load range is marginal, but I want the aggressive tread. )

--spray on bedliner

--spare tire mounts and hi-lift mount in bed

--A pillar boost and egt gauges

We're still discussing winch options. I like the idea of a front receiver mount, but Warn doesn't make a receiver mount for larger than a 9,500 lb winch, which seems a bit low. I'd like a 12,000, but shop hasn't confirmed that there's a mount for the Sport bumper.

On traction devices, I have the OEM LSD rear and am looking into an ARB for the front.

Looking into a combination spare tire, winch, and hii-lift mount for the bed. It sounds trick, but might be too expensive.

I want to mildly bomb the engine (probably EZ and injectors), but that will have to wait until after I put some miles on it.

As usual, I welcome thoughts and suggestions.

A periscope, to see out the pot holes with. No one else would think of it but I have been there, and I used to ride submarines too. Could be very handy. Also, bunches of Ham Radios, hope you have a license.
Good Luck,
John

96 CC 4X4 2500 SLT AUTO transmission, PrimeLoc, ISSPRO EGT Boost transmission Temp, GUTTED CAT, 150,000+ Miles still goin' strong, Lots of Ham Radio gear, NO IGNITION NOISE!!! Love my diesel!!! TST Fuel plate on the way, BOMBS AWAY!!!

You're right about the potholes. I figure the additional 6-7" of height from the lift and tires should help me see out from the bottom, though. Ham radio would be great, but I'm not licensed. When I'm in remote areas, I often take a satellite phone. You have to stop and aim the antenna at the appropriate satellite, but they work pretty well. The Iridim satphone system was much smaller and more convenient. Too bad they went bankrupt.

I've posted this link before (you veterans on this site are probably thinking "There goes Andy again, yapping about 4X4 vans!"), but check out Steve's 4X4 Van Page. He has a couple of thorough checklists, click on "stuff to carry when out in the boonies", "first aid kits" and "camping gear don't forget". Though unrelated to this topic, he also has a good page about snow chains.
I'm sure you already have this planned out, but I would suggest carrying plenty of spare parts that might be hard to get in Africa.
Andy
