Getting ready to order Mag-View diff covers: Dana 70 on front end, right?

Howdy all,



I have read and re-read the recent thread in this forum about which axle is in the rear of our trucks, and I'm of the opinion that my 2001 2500 6 speed 4x4 has the [hybrid??] Dana 80 rear differential. However, that thread did not address the front differential in the 4x4's. I thought I had remembered a thread several months ago that said the front diff is a Dana 70. I just want to make sure I order the proper pumpkin covers from Geno's garage.

Front Diff Dana 60

I think the front diff is a Dana 60. The diff cover bolt pattern is the same as the Dana 70.

Why do you want one for the front? It is a 60, but you may have steering linkage clearance issues depending on how far the cover sticks out.

It's a dana 60 and I was told that one was not going to be made because of no room between cover and steering bar.

Dana 60's and 70's share a common diff cover. The pumpkin and innards are bigger though. The problem is (as mentioned above) steering linkage clearance. If the dana 70 mag-hytec or magview will fit on there without hitting anything, they should work fine. My last dodge (an '85 D350) had a Dana 70 rear end, and I put an aftermarket Dana 60 cover on it.

You are correct in saying the rear has the Dana 80 on your truck.

Tom--yes your front is a 60 but the 70 cover works and clears--it does on mine---the only thing you need to worry about is if you do a lift kit the bracket to drop the track bar may make the track bar dent the cover upon compression--I changed over to the DT track and bar and so far so good... you may have to rotate your steering stabilizer..... chris

Bob, what's the scoop? I've already got the rear end sorted and the transmission pan, The front end's looking undersized!!

In the October issue of FOURWHEELER there's a Red Chevy 1-ton that has Dana 80's front and rear with custom Differential covers. They look like they would hold as much oil as our Cummins crankcases.
