Cummins N14

6x6's... 8x8's... lotsa smoke...!

HEY, Yoop - absolutely no problem, here, or over in the Political forum - I enjoy discussions where you are involved - we're actually pretty close on most points - and you help keep me on my toes on the ones we don't agree on! ;):-laf

Regards...

It's all good Gary. ;)

Yeah the wife and I talked it over and we're trading it in a Prius. I think by upgrading the electric motor and battery on the Prius and putting some HD springs on it we can pull our camper no problemo! Oo.

Just kidding. We're leaning towards keeping our truck and seeing how things play out over the next year or so. I love my Cummins! Thanks for the thoughts and advice guys--it helped a lot.

But the wife is talking about a Prius to replace the GC.

Not to get completely off subject, but a guy I work with purchaed a new Prius late last spring and has had quite a bit of trouble with the charging/battery system on it. He's the only one I've ever heard complain about them however. Most owners that I've talked to seem to really love them.

Changing from 6. 7 to 5. 9 is "trade up" not down.

Ford is healthy business model since they already own Cummins.

F-150, 4x4, manual 4 spd, 300 cu in straight 6, pristine condition, yep I'd think about that one.

Potential Pirus buyers hold onto $$$$, soon Subaru Forrester diesel boxer will arrive.

I expect it'll make excellent daily driver/grocery getter, pull small camper nicely and seat 4 plus some luggage, probably for less money than Pirus which maybe could pull a golf cart trailer at most.

That Ford 300 straight six is to gas truck engines what the 5. 9 Cummins is to diesel truck engines! GREAT motor!!

I might have to talk to the wife about that Subaru--we could be an all diesel family!

I think the 6. 7 is a trade up from a 5. 9. That EB is hard to beat and, at least for me, it's been 100% trouble free in 18 months of ownership. Couldn't be happier with the truck. But I do like that 5. 9!

It's too bad that nobody at Cummins knows that. They might have sold their engines to Ford if they had.

Have you thought of letting Cummins execs know that Ford owns their company?

Of course, Im not an expert here. But, if you look at Yahoo Finance, and look for Cummins stock (CMI), you will find that Cummins is a publicly traded company. Thats not to say that Ford (or some other company) might not be the majority stock holder. But, certainly no-one owns it outright.

Regarding your next truck being made in China. Is anyone old enough to remember when "made in Japan" meant that it was cheap junk ? First they learned how to make the best stereo equipment. Then, they learned how to make quality cars. I dont expect this to happen in the near future. But, my prediction is that, sometime this century, "made in China" will equate to high quality.

Quality is a side issue. The main issue is more jobs lost overseas and a widening trade gap. We can not continue to send out more cash than we take in. It is that simple

Only if they pay me a "finders fee". :-laf

Kenny61,

You and I are sure on the same page there. Im only making a prediction on what has happened in the past. But, I think you may see Chinese companies making cars and trucks here in the US, just like what has happened with the Japanese care companies. But, my hope is that Detroit gets things figured out (in a hurry) and makes domestic car/truck production by American companies our future. .

Things keep going the way they are and I predict that sometime this century, "made in China" will mean it was made in one of the former United States... ... ... ... ... .

The biggest problem GM, Ford, and Chrysler face is the cost of labor including employee healthcare and pensions which has been driven off the chart by the UAW. Have you heard the UAW talking about how they are going to help the automakers survive by reducing the load?

The only possible way the once-called big three are going to survive is by cutting the cost of labor. They are slowly doing that by moving production out of the US.
