Saturday while I was changing my trans filter and fluid, I looked at the inside of my right front tire and saw crackes in the sidewalls all the way down to the sidewall belts! Figured I was on borrowed time! So today I purchased 6 - 235/80R17's for $993. 40, mounted, balanced and new steel valve stems installed! This tire is made by Cooper and has a 60,000 treadlife warranty on them. Got them from Alton Tire in Post Falls and they even installed my ZIP™ Airless Valve Extenders at no cost!



I had gotten bids on them from $993 to $1,500 for tires including Michelin, Toyo and Cooper! No way I would purchase Goodyear or General!



They are a M&S tire but not real aggressive. That's fine for me, 95% of my driving is street and highway, very little of road.



So for you 3rd Gen Dually guys, keep these in mind. We'll see how they wear.

Actually on Saturday I ended up replacing my six goodyear GSA's. All of them were cracking on the sidewalls bad. I have been trying to get tires for a month - The Michelins weren't yet in production and the Matercrafts and Coopers were both over $1250 mounted and balanced out here. Neither dealer would guarantee against road hazards (for any price). If I went through a authorized Goodyear re-seller and let them "adjust" them, my prorated cost was $975. Goodyear company stores wouldn't touch them.



Because I drive 25-30,000 miles a year, I went ahead and got some General Ameri-Trac TR's for $853. 43 Mounted, Balanced, full road hazards, and free lifetime rotations. I figure in another 18 months or so I'll go with the 19. 5's I have always wanted (or maybe there'll be more choices) for tires.



Did I mention I had to wait 28 days to get my tires?



I have put about 500 miles on the new tires and they are OK. They balanced well, and are quiet. They have the lug tread and are approved by the RMA as a sever service snow tire (snowflake). In New Mexico? I travel a lot into the high country of Colorado and dually's are notoriously bad in the snow. We'll see how these do.

don't feel to bad ,I am not at all pleased with my coopers as they are not very good for mileage. rears (and I have been easy on them) are half gone with very low miles. I have not done any intensional burnouts thats for sure. the factory michilens lasted much longer and I did abuse them.

Which Coopers do you have? What size?

I looked at those, however the didn't have OWL and the cost was about $400 more.



What kind of a price did you get on them. (for us US folks, could you change it into US $'s) Thanks! :-laf

$214 per tire in Canuck bucks... mounted and balanced... or about $169 USD per.



I went with these because they did not have OWL. I had that on my POS Goodyear Ringle Wrangle 2 ply tires. :-laf I noticed the cracks in the inner sidewalls too.

I got 50,000 kilometers out of the Goodyears which is about 35,000 miles on USA EH. Not much. Michelin LTX always netted me 80K. For some reason my rear tires appear to have more wear. ;)

I have the Ameritrac TRs which came stock on my truck. Had them in plenty of snow this winter, with the truck in 4WD, never slipped once. Tracked straight and true. In fact, I have owned several 4WD trucks, and this truck has 4WD traction better than any of 'em.



Don't know where this "myth" came from that duallies are bad in the snow. And around here, it is up one steep hill, down another, with a stop sign or traffic light at every one.



That being said, when it comes time to replace these tires in a year or so (they aren't wearing too well) I don't know what I'm going to get.

Hi Bob and all. I have a side question. I also have dually and the Ameritrac TRs (They are not going to last long). I tow a 13k 5ver and the truck has only 15k milles on it. I noticed the Right side rear tire seam to have more wear than the left rear.

1) THE question? even though i have the limited slip rear when you are pulling heavy is the right driving the truck causing more wear on the right tires? If not how does the rear drive the truck.

2) I have rotated the tires but the outside rears can only be swaped from one side to the other without remounting them. The inside rears can go to the front. How are people rotating the tires on there dually? with out remounting the outside rears. After rotating them the ousides have more wear than the insides which came from the front. Do people rotate or just leave the rears alone.

I didn't notice any uneven wear on my right rear, and I've pulled both a 15k and about 6k 5er a couple thousand miles... not sure what your problem might be there.



I just finally got around to rotating my tires (other than the daily rotation on the way to work :)), and only move the fronts to the inside rear. My rear tires had much more tread than the front, and I think it will all even out so that all 6 will need to be replaced about the same time (around 50-60k based on wear so far). Hope this helps!
 
You should have even wear all around. What is the pressure in all four of the rear tires? Even having one 5-10 psi higher can do that. I tow heavy and the tires are wearing even... but real fast because for some reason the duals let go and smoke sometimes. :-laf



I rotated the tires on my first dually... the first set. Then I got lazy and saw no difference in longevity not rotating. I know some folks will disagree but my findings with several dually rams [this one is number 25] and some of them with over 250,000 miles shows that balanciing and tire pressure was what was needed and rotating only gave me a vibration until the cupped tread of the fronts wored off when put on the rear.



Just my experience with it.

I rotate mine the same as you, according to the owners manual, front to inside rear and outside rears swap with each other.

How many miles did you have on the stock tires? How much tread would you say was left? Do you tow or haul anything? Thanks
