Had a friend get the same treatment at the border. It was found he had driven his truck through a field two days before on the US side. The field had some wild stuff growing in it, stuck in his undercarriage.

i bet he about got shot twice. Once by the high farmers, and once by the boarder guards.

Joe,

I do a lot of work with a company in Ontario that builds custom machines for my company. When they come down for installs and repairs, they almost never bring tools or parts. Everything is shipped ahead of time. And they bring a copy of the purchase order just to help them get through. They say it is nearly impossible to get through with "strange" parts and tools without a problem.

Hi Jason,

I did it for a while without any problems, and then it went bad. When I cross now (which isn't often as I don't do that job anymore) I just bring my clothes and laptop. That's it.

I work on both sides, but am a Canadian citizen and resident. I am ALWAYS treated with respect coming into the US, but very often get a super-hassle from Canadian side when I return by truck. What really seems to set them off is that some of my equipment is US registered (although all Canadian tax paid) and they just think there's got to be something wrong with that.

On the other hand, if I fly, I use CanPass and seldom actually SEE the customs officer when I return (usually can clear by phone). I could smuggle a nuclear device and there would be no opportunity to check it.

Rhonda, did you get the names and addresses of all the "officers" involved? I would complain to their superiors and write to your congressman, senators, and John Ashcroft. I would do everything you can to make these people accountable, and to make them realize they must treat American citizens as such. There's nothing more you could have done at the time, but afterwards you can use all channels to make them accountable. Afterall, they work for us!
