gitchesum, I hope your temporary fix holds, but my experience with JB has not been too encouraging where the parts are subjected to heat. :( Maybe some high temp silicone gasket sealer would work better? Just a thought.

Why is it no one holds Cummins Engine Company responsible for this obvious manufacturing defect ? With thousands of TDR members here, isn't there one Lawyer out there willing to take them on ?????

I wish you guys could of read the BS response I got back from the "powermaster" when I asked them directly about this problem.

They should have come up with the fix, and sent us a letter explaining the problem, as well as pay for the fix.

If this was a Dodge engine, or a Powerstroke, or whatever..... I could only imagine what would be written here. Like I told Dodge & Cummins, I'll be taking my money elsewhere next time around.

I'm not in favor of pressing the gear off the camshaft for these reasons:

1. that press fit is all that holds it on, unlike the 370 marine cam that uses a bolt and a press fit. Re-pressing can result in less holding force becasue you have scuffed and moved metal.

2. You have to heat the gear, factory specifies not over 350 deg F, and that isn't enough for an easy drop on. If you get it half way on and it sticks, you have to pull it off again.

3. If you have any practice, removing the cam can be fairly fast, so long as you don't need to remove the lifters.

98.5 ?

Have heard that some of the early 24V could have this promblem also. I have one of the first 98. 5's. What should I look for?

Steve StL had it done to his early 98. 5. I think it's kind of more of a personal preferance with the 24v's, least that is the attudie I have recived when learning about it.

Might be worth looking into at least.

Joe I figured the main reason to remove the gear rather than cam was to avoid having to take the front end all apart, quite a bit of work. I'm I mistaken?

12 valve block for 98.5

My 98. 5 block must be same as 12V as I have blank off where fuel pump would be. Would timing case area be any different than 12V with the KDP issue?

Where to fix in Wa?

I'd like to fix mine but have a problem of finding a place to get it done. I'm in mid state Wa right now (Grand Coulee Area), and living in a hotel for a while. I'm quite capable of doing the work myself but since I'm far from home have no place to do it. Anyone know of a good, reputable shop that I can have do the fix for me. I'm willing to drive a few hrs to get it done. I've never brought my trucks to a shop before (paranoia), always took care of things myself but I'd like to get this fixed soon.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Mike:confused:

FF1063,

Cummins does NOT warranty these engines. The reason is that Dodge buys them with no warranty at all to save a few bucks. So Dodge is the company responsible for the problem. Cummins will take care of it if it's in some other vehicle, but not a Dodge.

Mike, if you don't mind a weekend trip over to Seattle you can get together with the NW Bombers at one of their bomb parties. Sometimes LarryB also has jig parties. PM Larry for more info.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, I'll look into it. I work Mon. thru. Sat. but somtimes the boss (thats me), lets me off a little early on Sat. Hopefully I can get something worked out, I don't mind cruisin to Seattle.

Thanks again

Mike

Got it back on the road yesterday. I would have outrun Mike but there was a one of them SUV driven by a woman in the way. :)

There is still a small oil leak that will just have to wait until I get the new gear housing installed. The main thing is that it's on the road.
