Last week it was discovered that at 70k miles the left side rear axle seal was leaking. Not having the time to do the job myself, I had a shop replace the seals on both sides as well as redo the rear brakes and flush the rearend.

They used a Havoline GL5 gear oil in the rearend. I asked them if they had added a friction modifier since I have a limited slip rearend, but was told that with GL5 that a modifier was not needed.

I'm thinking otherwise, as I now notice the when I backup and am turning at the same time that the rearend seems to shudder a bit. I haven't noticed any shudder going forward.

Haven't done any extensive testing of this, just something that I've noticed a couple times over the last 5 days or so.

Okay... . Since posting the above I've read more and see that maybe doing several figure 8's might help. However, I suspect it really needs some friction modifier added.

GL5 does need modifier. Try adding in 1/2 bottle increments until shudder goes away for best LS performance. Do 5-10 figure 8 tight turns after adding the modifier to get it worked into the diff. Don't wait too long because the shudder is eating up the clutch plates in the LS.
